Since you have been using the upgraded version of windows for a couple of months I would say the two incidents aren't connected.
If win 8.1 was the root cause the problem would have presented itself shortly after the upgrade.
It sounds more like the cable from the motherboard to the monitor is either lose or broken. After all it runs through the part you move everytime you open, close or adjust the laptop, so it is in a exposed situation.
Normally it is quite easy to fix, but you need to take it to a hardware repair store.
rjsymmes has the most accurate solution. Start with a battery replacement. Next course of action is to use a Bootable Media Source (Windows Disk or Recovery Disk) to see if the laptop responds and can have the Start Up repaired. If a Boot Media fails, then examine RAM, Hard Drive removal, then boot. Last resort Motherboard.

1) if yours LED power on and display of window not giving then problem from cpu.
a. first replace yours RAM and check display.
b. then display cable and check display.
c. Install new Display card and check display, if not giving display it means motherboard have a problem
2) LED not giving power on then problem from monitor
a. replace monitor power cable and check display
b. monitor logic card have aproblem
the classic cdr201 will not record it will go to wait and return to cd status(blank cd etc) there is no led display of sound during this operation you can hear the audio for brief couple of seconds before it goes back to cd mode
