My tomtom XL suddenly can't find a valid GPS signal for the past week.

  • Anonymous Jul 21, 2008

Driving through West London just stopped receiving signal. Went through the reset with Tomtom technical help but with no luck - have had to send it off for repair - luckily still under guarantee. Purchased from Currys last August (2007)

My tomtom one xl-s has been working just fine. While I was on a road trip this weekend, it suddenly could not find a gps signal. I have tried resetting it and powering it on and off but no luck. It still will not find a gps signal. What do I do now????

  • Anonymous Sep 01, 2008

Mine did the same thing last night. Turned it on, and it looked like it was trying to update or load files, then no GPS signal. I suspect a bad update from Tom Tom.

  • inkaholic33 Sep 19, 2008

same as above.. updated new version. gets not signal.. even after going back to old version the signal is gone

One XL lost GPS Signal and USA MAP!

  • Anonymous May 05, 2009

I also have experienced the same thing.

What we discovered accidentally to fix it is to hold down the power button (I can't even tell you how long - maybe as long as a few minutes.) Eventually it seems to reset itself and the signal comes back. But I can't seem to figure out what the cause is in the first place, nor how to get it to reset every time. Grrrr!

  • Mikey666 May 11, 2010

I bought a TOMTOM XL at the weekend and never tried satnav. 1st time I hooked it to USB I just got flashing red cross. No operation at all. Scary. Resolved by removing everything from its storage and starting again. Scary. Today QuickGPSfix rendered its GPS useless so brought me to this site.

This device is going back to the shop. Needs to be reliable. It'll end up in a car crash. Who made this? Europeans?

I suddenly lost the GPS signal today and could not get it back. All I got was the "No valid GPS signal". My solution was to tap on the GPS satellite bars when in the route map. this brought up the "Status summary page of the TOMTOM.

I then again tapped the satellite bar which brought up the "GPS Status" page. I then tapped the bar labeled "configure".

The radio button next to the option titled "Minutes (dm.m') was selected. I then moved the selection to "Degrees (d.d) and it started working.

I had just downloaded the GPS fix 5 days ago so it is not like this suddenly caused it to stop working.

This may not work for everyone but this is what it took to get mine working.

Cheers

Thank you this did the trick!

Thanx to all - This page got my one xl working again after the 4/6 date rollover. I did a factory reset (in Dutch I think - pick your language while it's flashing by) but the paper clip in the hole next to the SD slot seemed to be the cure. Signal strength page also seems to help. (I might look for a plug in antenna) I'll pass on TomTom's offer to upgrade my device.

I had the same problem this weekend. My Tom Tom XL had been working fine for a year or so, then for no apparent reason when I turned it on it said there was no GPS signal. When I went into the screen where you can see the satellite signals, it was reporting about 7 strong signals from satellites!

I pressed the power button for about 20 seconds and the device restarted. As it did so, it made the Tom Tom sound, showed a different screen as it started up, showed the map, then soon found the GPS signal.

Looks like Tom Tom's need a regular reboot to work reliably.

I have had my GPS (TomTOM One) on Waiting for Signal for 2 weeks now and I finally fixed it.

My symptomtoms (word play) were no signal at open areas, when connected to Tom Tom Home it showed exactly where I was and worked through the PC but when disconnected back to the same thing.

I called Tom Tom CS and nothing, FLash did nothing, factory defaults nothing, and updating did nothing.

What I did:
I charged the unit completely.
I took a paperclip and while off pressed on the reset button at the bottom by SD slot. I held it there for 30 mississippi's.
I did not turn it on after letting go.
I went outside to my car (parked on roof of parking lot) turned it on and set it on my dash vertically.
I left and came back in 1 hour and wallaaaaa. It is working perfectly!

Let me know if this fixes it.

The website says that you have to upload TomTom HOME from thir site and update your GPS signal once a week for optimum signal because the satellites move... the only problem is TomTom HOME seems to be more than a pain to load

This happened when I came back from Brazil...i think when you get an an area where the tomtom has to search for new satellite coordinates or loses the signal for a certain period it has difficulty finding again, so:

Go in to tom tom menu and rerset tom tom to factory setting (in the menu/change preferences/reset to factory settings)

Once you do that it will prompt you that you will lose all your saved favorites and itineraries ( i went ahead and said ok, if not you can write you addresses down before doing this)

Finally after you complete the process of resetting your tomtom probably still won't have a GPS signal. So in the menu/change preference/GPS status you will see a configure option

Select this option and ensure that the radio button is set to degrees and select done

leave tom tom on and allow 5-10 min for it to relocate the signal.

If that doesn't work, hope you bought a warranty :)

I just did this after trying everything. Changing the option to degrees fixed it in 20 seconds

If you bought one recently, return it and get a Garmin.
If you are out warranty, download all the fixes. Turn off the unit. Turn it back on holding the power button down until the Tom Tom trademark appears, let it cycle. You might have to do the power up cycle several times. There is no other fix, and by the way this bug will repeat itself. Tom Tom has no fix.

After working perfectly well last night, first thing this morning right when I needed my Tom Tom "NO VALID GPS SIGNAL."  Despite driving into another county with the help of the old fashioned road map - still no luck, still no valid signal.
This evening I have uploaded all the new updates that appeared in Tom Tom Home, and now i have nearly full signal again.  This worked for mine.  Hope it helps! x

I downloaded all the most recent updates, including the map correction option, then went outside and fiddled about with the configuration of the GPS status. It seems to work best on Degrees (d.d).

Had a GPS signal/no satellites problem on my TomTom One XL, unable to get a signal for three days and really not impressed. TomTom was up-to-date with firmware etc and TomTom help is next to useless so I tried re-setting the unit, changing the satellites, chucking the unit across me cab, shouting at it and nothing! And then just for fun, I placed the unit on it's side on my windscreen and guess what? I now have a complete signal again and TomTom is working fine. I am not an engineer or anything, just a simple HGV driver but now I'm thinking I should be working for TomTom! Give it a try and if it works for you... GREAT!

Hope this helps!

Regards, Pete

I had the same problem; after reading this solutions, I have installed all the updates using tom tom one home but it doesn't work, then I have connected my tom tom one with my lap and tried to access thru my lap using map correction option, then it starts working. I hope this will help you all.

I have gone through 3 GPS's in 6 months. They are TomTom One XL TM units. The first one lasted almose 6 months...since then I have had 2 different new ones sent to me. The 1st one I sent back I had to pay $15 shipping to return it, the next one they sent me an RMA so I didn't have to pay for the shipping.

This 3rd one didn't work right out of the box, so you call the level one techs and they make you run all different basic tests on it which can take up to 3 hrs. The last solution is a reformat of the unit....remember i SAID it was new out of the box? Still won't find a valid signal. So here we go, they are willing to send me another new unit, BUT this time I have to pay the return shipping again.

What kind of **** is that? It didn't work right from out of the box and they expect to have me pay for the return. It's like I'm paying for another unit which may also not work...my wife says I should just throw the unit in the lake and buy a Garmin...I hate to spend money for another but that is probably what I'll do....this is JUNK!

My Tom Tom XL also lost its GPS signal after 2 months of reliable use.... 2 days later, still no signal... so I tasked my hubby to return it which took a number of days (by which point the battery had died) I asked him to charge it enroute to the retailers to prove upon arrival that it wasnt working and voila! It was working again?! Maybe the flat battery did a reset? But its working fine again now.....bizarre...cant say I have complete confidence!

Same Problem with my "one" Tried all suggestions, firmware updates, etc. My unit is out of warranty and TomTom doesn't service out of warranty units. They give you $50 off a replacement unit, BIG DEAL.
DON"T buy TomTom, get a Gamin. Better service, warranty, reliability.

SOURCE: Tomtom not finding gps satellites

i had exactly the same problem, i dont really know how i solved it but first i thought it could be a memory problem slowing the gps signel so i reset the tom tom to factory settings then downloaded the updates from the tom tom home program of corce i lost all my destinations but i didnt want to do a back up just incase one of the updates had a virus or something so if u want to keep them i sugest u write them down first.and then i got a safty pin and pressed the reset button underneath where the memory card goes twice the second time i held it down for about 10 seconds then i looked for updates again from tom tom home. after that in tom tom home there is an option where u can operate your tom tom on your pc so i tryed that and i put in a destination on the pc and clicked on demo tour so i watched the route first it was a bit slow but started to speed up a little. after it had finished i un plugged the sat nav and went for a walk with it around the house soon as i went out side and set a destination it found 6 gps signels, make sure yhe battery is charged to at least half. well i hope anyone who follows my steps gets the same results, thought i lost 200 quid cos i have had it over two years and its only guarenteed for 12 months. well good luck.

Go to TomTom Home on your computer and do a update for your unit. In the update list you should see a GPS quick fix which helps the TomTom's aquire a signal faster. Hope this helps.

When was the last time you updated the QuickFix of your TomTom? It helps your GPS to find the satellites.
Please, do the following:
1) Install "TomTom Home" software in your computer from www.tomtom.com
2) Start TomTom Home in your computer
3) Plug in the GPS dock to your computer's USB port and place the GPS on the dock. The green light on the bottom right of the GPS should turn ON to indicate that the GPS is getting power from the dock and charging
4) Start your GPS while being in the dock. If the GPS asks "do you want to connect to computer" answer "YES"
5) The TomTom Home software will detect the GPS and check if there are any updates for it. Then you'll be offered updates to install. Some are free, some are not. Be sure you choose to update "QuickFix".

I lost signal on my tom tom one xl gps something is wrong with the signal

There is nothing wrong with the signal, I know this because I just used my GPS, the problem is that the receiver for the signal from the orbiting geosynchronous satellites is defective, you will either have to send it in to Tomtom for repair or replace it based on repair cost, which on average is $125.00 (USD)

I am not getting satalite signal on my tom tom xl

The most common problem to this is because the TomTom doesn't know it's current location.  It may be that you last used your device a long distance from where you currently are now.  I don't know how long you waited for the gps signal to acquire but it can take up to 10 minutes (even on military aircraft if they don't know current location).
Power it up and press on the signal strength icon.  That will bring up your satellite tracking status.  If it don't look like it's doing anything, then your gps has probably malfunctioned.  If it looks like it's acquiring satellites, then give it a good amount of time (10-15 minutes) to see if it can find your location.  I recommend doing it outside of your vehicle with no satellite obstructions to make the process go faster.

Waiting for valid gps signal

Go to TomTom Home on your computer and do a update for your unit. In the update list you should see a GPS quick fix which helps the TomTom's aquire a signal faster. Hope this helps.

No GPS Signal in TomTom One XL all of a sudden

From the title, I am made to believe that you can turn it on, but can't get the satellite signals, but from your description, it seems that you can't even turn it on, can you please let me know which is the case and describe in detail anything that you can about this problem and also if anything similar has happened and how long you have had this device.

Also, have you tried connecting it to a computer and downloading the latest software(firmware) from the manufacturer's website.

Once I know more, I can provide a better solution.

Can you describe the context you were in when this happened? One way to solve this is to regularly update the GPS fix in the desktop app HOME
