What type of noise does it make? If you hear the tray close and then the disc "spin" for a minute or so, that is normal. If it sounds like something is shaking or rattling or lasts more than 5 minutes, there is probably something wrong.
If it is an extended spin noise, the drive isn't recognizing the disc. Check if there are scratches and try another disc. If you hear a shaking or rattling, do not use the drive. It's probably better to replace the drive (check if it is under warranty - usually 1 year). This drive has an IDE connection. You will need to check your motherboard specifications to identify if you can replace the drive with a SATA optical drive (more common now) or if you need to find an IDE drive. (Note: OEM drives do not ship with the data cables or software discs, this will matter if you get a SATA drive.)
Some optical drives have a problem with the magnet that holds the disc for the laser to hold it. Some people fix this problem with duct tape; at <$20 for a SATA DVD-RW OEM drive, it isn't worth my time to fix.
I hope this helps. Please add a comment describing your sound and the computer you have for additional help.

hi,, there are different kinds of DVDs ,, some are DVD+R , DVD-R ,,and dual layered dvds so.. please check the details for support of dvd , cd drive...
It's common problem with combo drives in notebooks, they don't seem to last long.
Try this:-
Go to my computer>properties>hardware>device manager and look down the list for your cd/dvd drives and click the '+' sign then highlight your dvd drive and right click to delete.
Restart the pc and windows will find the drive again automatically and install the drivers.
If the problem persists the laser is faulty in the drive and the drive will need to be replaced.
