If you haven't got anti virus on your laptop, install it now. Microsoft Essentials is quite good and free.
Run CHKDSK/F to check for any drive errors.
Click on the battery symbal on your desktop and select power management. De-select sleep mode and stop the hard drive from being turned off when not attended on mains power.
That should cover all aspects of your problem.

Which is your operating system?
Below mentioned steps are for Vista,assuming your operating system is Vista.
Post back if it is not Vista.
Run it from the Command Prompt of Recovery Options if you have, or a Vista boot disk. You can
borrow a friends if needed as they are not copy protected or make a repair disk.
And/or Run the other diagnostic tools I listed.
You probably do have hard drive issues its only can they be repaired or not.
If you need to make repair disks - these help repair Windows not re-install.
