The on off switch does not stay in the on position. We've held the switch in place with a spoon, but even that doesn't work. From the day we bought the kettle, in May 2006, the switch has been 'tempermental'. Now it just won't work. Thoughts on repair?
Look under the kettle at the round circular connector in the bottom. Inside there is a small button that is depressed when the kettle is put on the base. If this is not pushed in far enough it will have problems.
The cause is that after some use the connector in the base plate collapses into the base by 1-2 mm This means the switch is not pushed in far enough.
My kettle had similar issues... I pulled the base plate apart (3 screws I think) and cut a round disk of plastic to lift the connector up by about 1-2mm and then reassembled the base.. No more issues

I have the same problem with my Hamilton Beach kettle. I cut a 1 inch circular piece of plastic from a yogourt lid (like a washer) and inserted it into the recess around the connector on the jug part so it covers the small button. This did the trick for keeping the switch on to boil the water, but I worry about safety and that it is not attached to anything. I do not understand about putting a piece of plastic inthe base - maybe my model doesn't have the same configuration?
