Check the Speaker Connections and Volume Control Settings
1 Verify that the lack of sound is not due to faulty speaker connections. A simple way to test it is to substitute the speaker connection with headphones and see if you get any sound. 2 Open the volume control window by clicking your "Start" button and then "All Programs." Click "Accessories," then "Entertainment," then "Volume Control." Alternatively, just click on the speaker icon that's in your System Tray. 3 Check the volume and mute settings. If any of the mute check boxes have been checked, uncheck them. If this doesn't work, read on.
Perform a System Restore If Necessary
1 If the sound has been audible from your computer's speakers and is suddenly lost, you may need to perform a System Restore. Click on the " Start" button and then "All Programs." 2 Click on "Accessories," then "System Tools," then "System Restore." 3 Complete the System Restore Wizard. If this doesn't work, read on.
Delete and Reinstall the Original Sound Drivers
1 Deleting and reinstalling your sound driver may resolve the problem. Your sound driver may have been corrupted or may be missing. The result of this is that the restore utility menu won't be available. For Windows XP, follow these steps. 2 Click on your "Start" button. Click on "Control Panel" and then "System." Next, click on "Hardware," then "Device Manager, then "Sound, Video and Game Controllers." 3 Click on a sound device named in the Device Manager, and then press the Delete key on the keyboard. Click "OK" in the window that appears. Remove all the listed sound devices i this way EXCEPT Audio Codec and Legacy Audio Drivers. 4 Restart your computer. Reinstall the deleted drivers using the Driver and Application Recovery CDs that came with your Windows XP system.

I have a tv screen that i use to play x box, watch movies and use it for a computer but there is no sound on the computer

That sounds like a computer problem, not an Xbox or screen problem. There may be no sound on the computer because it is aware that you are running the sound to another device like external speakers or the speakers in the TV if there are any. There may be a setting in the software of your computers that allows for sound to come out both the computers speakers and any speaker device the computer is feeding sound to.

My grandad has bought a computer and i tryed to show him how to play a dvd but no sound was playing. I found out there was no sound card? I dont actually know what this means but surely a computer should...

If there is no sound card. Probably it was disabled the sound and maybe there is no really sound card was installed. To make it short buy a PCI sound card, turn off your computer and install the card to PCI slot and turn on your computer and your computer will detect that there is a found new hardware. Ignore it and insert the cd installer and install the driver of your sound card. If it's ask you to restart just restart your computer to update its system. In case that there is a built in sound on your computer check your motherboard model and search for the driver from their official website and download and install, if you download the correct driver it will automatically installed your sound and your sound will be working. Have a nice day!

My speakers will not play on my computer

Those speakers were originally supplied with Gateway computer system that had sound cards with digital outputs. While some versions had analog and digital sound inputs, most often the speakers had digital input only. The on-board sound in the eMachines is analog output only, so the speakers are most likely not compatible with your computer. If you want to use those speakers, you will need to locate a PCI sound card with digital output.
