I have just purchased a PHILIPS SRP2008B/86 universal remote controller, I have tried a few times by following the instruction book. Is there anything I didn't know?

I found it worked when further away from the TV and DVD player I was trying to program. Too close and it did not work at all.
Make sure you turn the device off then on before putting in the access code.
