By checking with your local HP dealer you can either get used replacement parts or they can order a new part for your printer. They can also do an assessment to see what it will cost to replace the part. Sometimes it is cheaper to replace the printer than ordering new parts. You can also try your local rycle place and see if they have the same model that recently came in to be recycled.

the hinge is not plastic, only the insert sleeve that goes into the hole atop the door is plastic. If the actual hinge (metal arm) is broke, then you need to order a new part (not difficult if frig is 20 years or less). If you cannot find the part, go to a metal shop and show them the broken part, they usually can repair it or remake a new piece.
If the hole in the door went bad (that is: if the hole tore open and cannot hold the hinge pin) you need to have a metal repair brace added to the door. This will involve the metal shop or a good mechanic that can come to you and do the neccessary repair at the house; otherwise you need to bring the door to the metal shop. macgivor

not really..that's a service level repair that takes around 1.5 hours with the right tools

To answer Meyerson's questions:
My symptoms did not include papers jamming in the ADF -- in fact, the ADF didn't work at all due to the broken left hinge.  :(  Also, I don't recall having any unusual problems with the ADF jamming frequently before the hinge broke to the point where the ADF didn't work at all.  
I obtained the replacement ADF left hinge assembly by searching online for a parts dealer.  I believe I ended up ordering the part from Precision Roller.

Yes, I had the same problem in Sept 2006 - a broken left hinge that needed fixing. Ordering the part was easy. I was able to install it myself, but it required some attention to detail.

I called Brother International at 800-284-4357, Option 1, then 2. I ordered the left hinge - Part No: LP-2403001 - described as ADF Hinge Assembly (left). If you broke the right hinge, the part number may differ slightly, but person on phone should be able to assist. It cost me $11.55 including shipping.
