My 3-phone set is new. One does not connect at all - in the other two, the voice of the caller fades away rather quickly, so I have to hang up.
I've contacted my internet server, Qwest, and they can't help. Their suggestion was to return it to Costco.

Voice Mail is not a function or feature of any telephone set,
nor does the GE 29581 phone have an Answering Machine
System that might be confused with Voice Mail.
VoiceMail is an option offered by some (not all) Telephone
Service Providers. Check with your Telephone Service
Provider to learn how to go about using theirs if it's available.
The original GE 29581 phone User's Manual is available at:

Tech needs to program Supervision Disconnect for the line/s and Carrier must do the same so they talk to each other. So when callers hangs up a disconnect signal tells the system to hang up. 90 percent of the time the tech had it programmed but the carrier did not.
It is possible that the mic hole is blocked and the voice do not detect properly to be processed.
clean and check if not the mic might be faulty , use a new one and test as this is inexpensive. if not the preamplifier of the mic or the amplification stages of the mic is faulty.
A good signal test can prove corrrect.
no make or model listed
on many phones there is an ability that when the phone is picked up it is automatically connected to the caller and pressing the answer button is the same as hanging up
as for you second point , if a caller rings but hangs up before the message beep or after the beep but hangs up , there will be no message recorded
jncharles+jdcrutch - with all those problems you should return the phone and have them exchange it.....yo could also have the firmware reflash on the phone....but most times you have to pay for that.....as to the phone fading in and out....sounds like you need a new LCD.....so with all those issue it may cost you more than the cost of a new phone....so just have it replaced.
