Magnavox 2GB MP3 Player, MSA2025/37 quit working. We bought 5 for our kids. All but one still comes up with "Magnavox" word then nothing. Plug into our Dell Inspiron, recognizes but then says "can't start device." Any ideas, help?

Owned mine for 4 months and now it does the same thing. Im very frustrated with it. Dont waste your money on one of these.

  • irouli Aug 07, 2008

    Player sopped playing. Steps taken:
    1. Pressed the on button and all it did was display MAGNAVOX for a while then turn itself back off.
    2. Attached to the computer and the computer wouldn't recognize it and the player would display OK TO DISCONNECT message which kept staying on even after being disconnected from the computer. Had to remove battery to get rid of the message.
    3. The device manager (software) that came with the player also wouldn't recognize it until I pressed the back button AS I attached it to the USB hub. There is a blurb somewhere on their site about pressing that button until it is recognized, but thats wrong. It has to be pressed as you connect the unit. Now that the device manager recognized it, even said that the unit reported an error, I tried the repair option. Now at this point the display on the player is blank. My computer sees it but calims that no drivers are available for it. A couple minutes into the repair, the unit shows OK TO DISCONNECT. At this point the computer claims that the device cannot start. A little bit later the device manager finishes the repair and claims UNABLE TO UPGRADE FIRMWARE.
    4. I tried calling the support number. Magnavox has a site, but you can't register the product there and you can't get any links for email support there: You only get a number 1-800/705-2000. Talked to two people. The first one took down my information politely including things that have nothing to do with the problem as in my home address. Couldn''t even hear the second (tech) person. Claimed he'd call back. Still hasn't.

So that's it. I bought it at a Walmart store on 5/24. Looked it up on the website and was confused because it only has a 90 day warranty and they don't sell it online anymore. New products normally have a 1 year warranty. Used or refurbished products have a 30 to 90 day warranty. So I checked the fine print on the product and in the warranty section it says:

Note: Any product sold and identified as refurbished or renewed carries a ninety (90) day limited warranty.

in bold. There was nothing identifying it as a refurb. I don't think Walmart knew it was refurbished. Is there anything we can do about that?

Just to follow up on the post by Blu2aRox If you don't have the software you can download it here: http://www.m4c.magnavox.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/cpindex.pl?scy=US&slg=AEN&cat=MP3_PLAYERS_CA&sct=FLASH_AUDIO_PLAYERS_SU&grp=PORTABLE_ENTERTAINMENT_GR&session=20081017190716_24.225.21.9&ctn=MSA2025/37&mid=Link_Software&hlt=Link_Software The "Back" button is the arrow button next to the volume control (took me a while to figure that out). You hold down the back button when you plug it into the pc, and windows will recognize it, and the magnavox software will ask if you want to repair it. I had to do it twice - the first time the software said it failed to repair. But I think that was because Windows was still installing the device - if I had waited for that to finish it might have worked the first time. Thanks Blu2aRox! Works great again.

I tried to do this on a Windows 7 computer. The magnavox device manager asked to repair device, but would fail: "Failed to update firmware" or some message like that. I tried it many times no luck. I had the feeling it had something to do with the driver WIndows 7 was installing. Played around with uninstalling driver to no avail. Finally moved to a WIndows XP computer and tried the same steps. Installed the device manager before plugging in the device. Plugged it in, windows went through some driver installation, and at the end of it (i think, or i had to remove the remove the device after installation and plug it in again). Repair prompt came but repair failed. Tried removing and plugging in again, started repair and while repairing, ran the software upgrade tool from here:http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/cpind... (the ...fus_eng.exe file). This time repair seemed to last longer and finally was successful. I don't know whether it was moving to XP and trying two times, or whether the software upgrade exe made any difference (it said extracting files but no other screen came up). Anyhow, I'm not willing to break this (even if I knew how) just to find out what did :P Hope this helps someone else

Had the same problem with my MP3 player and just got off the phone with Jason @ Magnavox and he walked me through this and fixed mine....here is what you need to do......have the magnavox device manager open and ready, make sure the mp3 player is off, hold down the "return" button and insert the mp3 into the usb..... with the return button still held down hold it there until the device manager recognizes it and starts and then you can release the button and the device manager will repair the mp3.....you'll loose all the info and songs that are on it but I can live with that......

I tried the solution for this problem.

I held down the back button and the "+" volume button (just for good luck). My PC recognized it then, and the Magnavox device manager tried to repair it, but it didn't work. I tried to repair again and it worked. Then it refused to turn on so I replaced the batteries (again) and it works just fine now.

Good Luck!!!

Removing the battery, then putting it back in has worked for me. I then made sure had the latest firmware update (4.2.5 as of 26Mar09). However, when I downloaded the firmware update it didn't work at first. Windows was blocking it, which I found out by right-click+properties. I unblocked the firmware program, and was able to install it. I've had no MSA2025 problems since.

To clarify:

If you are having the same problem as I was just having 5 minutes ago - the mp3 player will turn on, show Magnavox logo then shut off and isn't recognized by your computer:

When you are plugging the mp3 player into your USB port, HOLD DOWN the reset (curved arrow on the side) button AS you are putting the mp3 player into the port, not AFTER you plug it in. Then the device manager will prompt you to reset the device.

^_^ Yay!

Possibly a little hope here for you all. I had the same problem. I bought the MP3 player...at WalMart!!.. and after 15 days, it took a dump on me so I headed back to just do a simple exchange for the same unit. Of course, that didn't happen because I had exceeded my store warranty by a few days and was now at the mercy of the manufacturer, Magnavox.

I had the same problem going out to register online and couldn't find a thing! Before I decided to call them to register and discuss my options, I did a little research and found you all and your complaints. Needless to say, I was not looking forward to calling Magnavox after seeing everyone having the same problem and not getting any assistance in resolving their issues.

Eventually I sucked it up (ok, I had a vodka before I called so I could simulate nice and polite!) and called their 800 number and at first, thought I was in for a giant run-around when I began getting transferred. But surprisingly, that didn't happen. I was given to a gentleman named Steve who was not only polite but understanding and very nice. I told him about what I'd read and the BS that the company was handing out and he let me rant and, as a consumer, agreed that it sucked.

Anyway, long story short, he said their online registration site has been down and apologized. He registered it for me and said my device was covered for replacement. Of course, that doesn't exactly thrill me considering the product appears to be a piece of **** but for now anyway, it's the only resort I have. If it goes out again, then all bets are off. Yeah, I do have to pay for the shipping but that's the case with almost any return and hey, it weighs like an ounce, right? Big deal.

The exchange policy guarantees a turn around time of UP TO 15 days...NO MORE. So we'll see what happens. Maybe I'm naive but I bought it so now I'll wait for my package to arrive. As far as any run-around or BS, didn't experience that in any way. Steve was pleasant to deal with. I'd suggest all of you give them a ring and ask for him personally...he's in the tech support/warranty division, if I'm not mistaken lol. I'll try to let you all know the final outcome. Good luck to you all.

Thank you for the help. I guess I'm lucky and have had mine for 2 years before having this problem. I had to go into 'My Computer' and type in 'msa' to find the device manager. I was able to pull it up and do as instructed in Solution #5. All my songs are gone, but I have my MP3 back. :) That is why I have all my songs on iTunes to put back on. You never know when something like this will happen.

Update to solution #5. The back button is the curved arrow button on the top right side of the MP3 player as you are holding it to look at your screen. I'm really smart and I didn't understand which arrow he was referring to, so I was pushing the up (straight arrow). After trying about 50 times and rereading and rereading, I realized he was talking about the curved arrow button. Hope that helps someone else.

It worked like a charm once I figured out the right button to hold down.

Awesome. Thank you so much for this site and everyone's input. This was my 10 year old's player and I just thought it was broke. I'm so glad I thought to look on the internet to try to fix it.

Just wanted to say that 0100's solution (with the clarification of which button to hold and when, Solution #5) worked for me.  I couldn't reset the device any other way.

I just had the same problem. Here's what I did. Un-install the Device manger and then go to this websight:
http://www.m4c.magnavox.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/cpindex.pl?scy=US&slg=AEN&cat=MP3_PLAYERS_CA&sct=FLASH_AUDIO_PLAYERS_SU&grp=PORTABLE_ENTERTAINMENT_GR&session=20081017190716_24.225.21.9&ctn=MSA2025/37&mid=Link_Software&hlt=Link_Software
Now download Device/Firmware Manager, Version: 0101001006 English (US) and instill it. Then download Firmware Upgrade - Software, Version: 002.022.005 English (US) and run it. Now open the Device manger and click the repair tab. Now hold the back button on the mp3 player and plug it in to the computer until the computer screen says that it has reported an error. Now click repare. This worked for mine I hope it works for yours.

2 GB Magnavox

The MSA2025 is a neat little player - you just pop off the cap, and the usb connecter is directly attached to the device. So, no more cords.   The reset is simply to remove and reinsert the batteries.  It can work with Windows XP or Vista, and it is compatible with Windows Media Player 11. I would go ahead and upgrade the firmware at the first sign of trouble, because my friend, who is a Magnavox tech, had her share of problems with this one before upgrading the firmware. The only drawback of this player is that it is not compatible with DRM-protected WMA files - so it won't be compatible with Napster, Bearshare, Leap Frog, and many others. It is not compatible with iTunes.  Rhapsody's Mp3-Only service will work, as will Mp3's from Limewire, Morpheus, etc. I would only use mp3 files with this device.
I would reccomend using Windows Media Player 11 to Sync songs to your Mp3 player, but you can also drag and drop using Windows Explorer - just drop  the files in the Music folder of the Magnavox.

The manual can be found at: http://www.m4c.magnavox.com/files/m/msa2025_37/msa2025_37_dfu_aen.pdf

The Magnavox website also has the "Magnavox Device Manager" - which is the same as a Philips Device Manager but with a different logo.
