You don't say what Mac OS version you're running or many other details, but try running Disk Utility or Disk First Aid, normally in the Utilities folder, and see if it can repair anything.

It sounds like the drive is failing or has already failed.

PS: That Mac G4 is well past its prime. :-(

SOURCE: firelite wont mount on my computer

look at its format, (NTFS) or (FAT32)? and check the DRIVER for the hdd to see if it has any complications or errors, this is easyest fixed by deleting the HDD driver in Device managment and then restarting the computer. good luck.

SOURCE: recognized - but no mount

Don't know about the MAC part, but an I/O error implies that the either the source file cannot be read or the destination drive will not write. This is usually an indicator of a bad HDD. To check, I would attempt to connect the external drive to another computer. If it still gives the same indication, contact the drive manufacturer about data recovery recommendations

SOURCE: mac not able to read drive

disconnect mybook from the computer then disconnect the power cable to turn the mybook off completely. Plug it back in after a few seconds and then reconnect to the computer. Worked for me and didn't lose any data.

Whenever there is an HFS Volume could not be repaired issue, that means that your hard drive's existing volume has been damaged and may not be retrievable. In most cases like this, you would be advised to perform an Erase and Install to correct the damaged directory on your portable HD. However, as I understand that is not what you want to do, you may want to research Mac Utility software like these titles below:

Disc Warrior 4.1
font.f1 {font: 12.0px Helvetica}
(for Macs from Alsoft)

Tech Tools Pro 5.0 (for Macs from Micromat)

Drive Genius 2 - Mac (for Macs from Prosoft Engineering)

These are three of the better hard drive diagnostics, repair and directory rebuilding software on the market for Mac Users. I have used them a number of times as a professional onsite Certified Mac technician and they have helped me to help the customers I assisted many times over.

These Mac Utility software all have a price point of under $100.00 and when you are able to experience just how well they work, you find it is worth the investment.

an HFS volume error is repairable with the right software and these utilities are your best option aside from outright erasing and installing your Lacie HD.

My MAC PowerBook G4 locked up. I turned it off. Now when I turn it on it goes to the white screen with the Apple logo and that is as far as it will go.

Your most likely issue is a bad hard drive. You can verify this by grabbing your Operating System disc and booting to it (hold the "C" key when you turn the computer on). After you've booted to it you can go into the Utilities option on the menu bar at the top and click Disk Utility. If you highlight the disk there should be some information down at the bottom about it, one of which should say "S.M.A.R.T. Status," if it says anything other than "verified" then you have a bad hard drive. If it says "verified" then you can attempt to repair disk permissions. That may fix it, it may not. Ultimately you may end up having to replace the hard drive.

When powering it up it starts to boot I get a blue screen then it goes black where do I start ?

Try starting your mac from it's install disc.
1) First turn off your computer.
2) Then restart it, right when you push the power button to turn it on, press the option key down and hold it
3) pressing the option key will bring to a screen where you can choose your startup disk. Usually, you'll see your Macintosh HD available to startup from. Don't choose anything yet.
4) Insert your install disc into the CD slot.
5) wait a couple of seconds and then clock on your install disc as your startup option.
6) after clicking on the disc, go to the menubar and click on Utilities then disk utility.
7)once the disk utility app is open hit "verify disk permissions"
8) after you've "verified disk permission" hit "repair disk permissions"
- this might take a long time depending how much you've actually done this (which it's good to do every other month or so to keep your mac running smoothly). things might seem to freeze up as well, but it's the mac trying to verify and repair broken permissions on your computer. Don't that's normal.
9) after you have repaired the disk permission, reboot your mac by quitting disk utility and then choosing the startup disk as your normal macintosh HD. That should do the trick. If not, tell us what has changed.

My mac is not recognizing my disk from my hard drive

Open Disk Utility (as I'm sure you already have) and select the main partition of the problematic disk on the left side, which should be titled disk1s10. In the First Aid tab, click the "Repair Disk" button on the bottom right hand corner of the window. *Note: If this is the current boot disk, you will have to boot off of the Mac OSX Install Disk by inserting it and holding the "C" key while it is turning on. Select your language and choose Utilities --> Disk Utility from the menu on the top of the screen, then following the above instructions.

Try starting up with the shift key down--a safe boot. You will not be able to work with the internet or many externals but this will test functionality. You can run Dish Utility and verify but not fix the disk and repair permissions. Even better would be to startup from a boot CD/DVD and hold down the C or D key. Then you could fix the Disk too.
Next I would save all your necessary files, preferably on an external hard drive.
If the disk is OK, I might remove as half the programs from the Applications, certainly any that are automatically started up. Reboot without the shift key and see if there is a problem. Add half of those back and try again. Half the amount to add or subtract--a binary search. Until you locate the problem program or reach a state you can live with.

It sounds like the system is corrupted. What I would do is to get your instal disk and boot up holding down the c key on your keyboard. Once you have booted up go to the file menu and run disk utility to verify and repair the hard drive if necessary. Then go to the instal menu and instal a fresh system remembering to preserve the users data so you do not wipe anything. Hopefully this will work.

The Updates Mac OS X and Safari Updates can't be Installed.

The latest Safari 4.0.3 requires MacOS 10.5.7 or 10.5.8. Which versions are you using? In fact, all Safari 4 versions including betas require at least 10.5.6. Otherwise IIRC the latest was 3.2.3 of Safari. It should have said that it was not compatible but you may want to go to VersionTracker.com or Apple and check the requirements.
Also run Disk Utility and Verify the disk and Fix the permissions before and after every install. If the Verify gives errors, you will need to boot from your CD/DVD (SOL on MacBook Air, hope you have an external boot disk or drive) and Repair the disk before working on permissions. There are some "errors" shown for permissions that can be ignored, they have used links (lrw...) where it expects none. -Ken

Used Mac software update on a G4 portable two weeks ago and now when I use it it hangs. Any way to fix this problem??

Hi, Sorry you are having problems,
Try this:
restart your Mac, and VERY QUICKLY, press the following 4 keys and hold them until the mac does a restart 4 times, it is called resetting the PRAM:
cmd + alt + P + R
then, after 4 startup chimes,
switch to these 4 buttons:
cmd + alt + O + F
you will enter the Open Firmware interface.
type this, exactly:
reset-nvram then hit return
reset-all then hit return
your Mac will restart,
then, VERY QUICKLY, hold down the shift key ( not caps lock, but caps ) and hold it until the mac stats to boot, you see the progress wheel under the grey apple logo, this is called booting with extentions disabled,
the boot up process is much Much longer than usual, it is performing a fsck disk repair
Then, Log in and run disk utilities and repair the permissions, do it over and over again until there are no errors...
Also, verify the disk to see if there are any obvious disk problems.
Then, once that is all done and there are no disk errors, SHUT DOWN your mac and then boot it up normally, .....
See if that helps.....
If it does not help, you are going to have to re-install Mac OS using the archive and install feature.
Good luck.
