Canon PowerShot SD400 No memory card message, but there is a memory card installed. Tried multiple memory cards and got the same message. Made sure the memory card was locked.

  • kakima Dec 27, 2010

What size are these cards? The SD400 is designed to work with SD cards. If your cards are larger than 2GB then they're actually SDHC cards and won't work in the camera. Also, make sure the cards are UNlocked if you want to take pictures.

There are several possible causes for "memory card locked", "memory card error", or "no memory card". Some include trying to use a 4GB SDHC card with an older camera made before SDHC format came out. Others include problems with the tiny slide switch on the side of the card, or the electrical contact switch internal to the camera. The problem may also arise from simple formatting problems if the card has never been formatted in the camera (note that this will also erase the card). Troubleshooting tips for this problem may be found at this link. By the way, if you're using 4GB or larger SDHC cards, they won't work with the SD400 as that camera was made before SDHC came out. Consider 2GB or less standard SD cards only. They're very inexpensive these days on Amazon..

First, make sure your camera can accept SDHC cards. If the camera says the card is locked, move the slide switch on the side of the card.

Number of photos

You can't get room for more than 33 pictures on a 16MB card.
I'd suggest you buy a bigger SD card for the camera.
Your camera can use up to 2GB cards.

Canon Powershot SD400 won't upload pics to computer

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.

I bought a 4g SDHC card for my camera canon powershot sd400.

Well, first of all, I'm not exactly an expert on this, so please don't rely solely on my response.

It's possible that it needs an SD card, not an SDHC card. SDHC cards are high capacity, and some cameras just aren't able to use them because they're set up for the plain SD cards. Does it say what kind it needs in the manual? I think, if it's an older camera, I'm not sure what age exactly, they can't use SDHCs. Like I said, I'm not an expert, so you might want to get more info, if you can. Hope this helps.

Hi. My Canon Powershot sd400 is telling me there is a " memory card error"...and "Card Locked!". Any idea how to fix this? Heidi

Hi!
You have to unlock your memory card. All memory cards have this small lock mechanism on the side.

Make sure that the slider is on the UNLOCK position. If it's already on the UNLOCK position and you are still getting the same error message, try to set it to LOCK, then set it back to UNLOCK position.

I hope that helps.

Good luck and have a nice day!

Locked card

Pull out your memory card, and find the little gray slide switch, if it is away from card connection it is locked, slide switch (little gray slide switch) toward the card connection. This will unlock your memory card.
