I think it's simpler than heatman101 imagines!

Does this Fridge freezer have only ONE thermostat? (in the FRIDGE compartment). If not, Ignore this reply!

- Often, fridge freezers have ONE circuit with ONE cold coil (Evaporator), switched on and off by the thermostat sensing the temperature in the FRIDGE compartment. The 1st section of the coil cooling the FREEZER compartment to LOW temperatures followed by a second, smaller, section in the WARMER fridge compartment. These are always on and off at the same times.
If the fridge compartment is sufficiently cold (as it most likely ALWAYS IS when in a very cold garage) then the thermostat in the FRIDGE compartment will always remain OFF. - This is fine for the fridge part (unless it drops TOO low and your milk freezes!), but will mean your FREEZER compartment will WARM UP above the -18 degrees C that it NEEDS, hence spoiling your Ice Cream! - Garages are RARELY THIS LOW, so you can't rely on ambient conditions to to help your FREEZER stay cold....so spoilage IS LIKELY.
These appliances have a "CLIMATE RATING/CLASS" (consult your handbook or dealer).... There are 4 ambient working temperature ranges/classes and the lowest working ambient temperature is a mere 10 degrees C.... a MILD winters day! (see http://www.whitegoodshelp.co.uk/wordpress/climate-classes-for-fridges-freezers-and-fridge-freezers/).
If you want an appliance to work in colder ambient conditions... seek out a special (and be prepared to pay extra). I think BEKO cater for cold environments so maybe start there.
There are some pseudo fixes to this problem (like adding a lightbulb inside the fridge compartment to ensure the temperature can lift enough to turn ON the thermostat.. hence initiating the cooling, thereby maintaining the FREEZER at -18 degrees!). However, my advice is BRING your fridgefreezer back into the warmth of your house... or buy a new one designed for the garage.

Footnote : There IS a serious side to this... many people are away from home during cold snaps and on return NEVER NOTICE that their frozen food has DEFROSTED during the cold weather as it's RE-FROZEN when the fridgefreezer resumes normal operation as the weather warms. Bugs can multiply during these periods when the appliance is unknowingly OFF. Food poisoning results!.. so take care folks!

Hi,

Many times a freezer and/or refrigerator do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...there are also many other things that can go wrong.

If you are hearing a clicking or buzzing then check out the last two tips.

If your refrigerator is running but warm, then...

Check out these tips that I wrote about that... it is a great place to start trouble shooting your unit...and something that you can do rather then calling a repair person to do a simple thing for you...

Why does super cool and super freeze orange lights flash

A blinking orange light on appliances such as refrigerators and freezers indicates that the "supercool" or "superfreeze" feature is active. These features are designed to quickly cool or freeze the contents inside the device. A flashing light serves as a visual cue that the unit is actively working to quickly cool or freeze food. Once the desired temperature is reached, the light will stop flashing, indicating the unit has completed the cooling or freezing process.

Kenmore refrigerator freezer stopped freezing and cooling then several hours later started working again ?

Look at what time the defrost timer is set to. It may just be as simple as resetting the time or you may need to replace it .

Samsung model rs263tdpn fresh food stops cooling.

Air channels freezing? they might be blocked with foreign matter, clean them out. This might also be as simple as turning down the dial for how much you wish to cool the unit. Running it constantly at full blast is not a good idea.

Refrigator not cooling properly, freezer works fine

I'll assume you don't have much food/items in the freezer section. Because you have the fridge set on the max cooling setting and the freezer set higher than the mid setting, it could be that you have frozen the cold air passage from the freezer to the fridge.

If you can, 1) remove all contents that would spoil; 2) turn off the fridge 3) open both doors and allow the fridge to manually thaw out completely (this will speed up the opening of the cold air exchange passage between the freezer and fridge, which is likely blocked and frozen solid. Have plenty of towels handy to soak up the water from the defrosting process,

After a FULL day of being left off and doors open to thaw out, check for any further thawing and dripping water inside, if present wait another 8 hours (you really want to get it thawed out the first time!) When that's done, reset BOTH temperature controls to the factory mid-point setting (5?) as marked on your control knobs.

The key to having a refridgerator run properly is to allow for it to run at the factory settings for at least 24 hours BEFORE you adjust the controls higher and/or lower for each section. Adjust it up or down in ONLY 1 setting increments so as to not cause ice build-up and freezing of the internal air exchange passages.

Also, as you've relegated this fridge as a garage "beer & backup" unit, make sure to keep the freezer as full as possible to make it run as efficiently as possible. You can freeze jugs of water and pack it with cheap thrift store bread to help it run correctly. An empty freezer has to work harder to keep just air at freezing temps. As such, it will pass much colder air into the fridge, and cause these types of freeze ups. By the way, turning up the temp controls only makes it worse and just results in a total "freeze up" inside the cabinet panels that you can't easily see or get at to rectify, hence the reason to shut it off and let it fully defrost.

When you're done, you should have your fridge back in action working like it should, but remember, don't rush temperature adjustments, even thou we all want those frosty beverages, it'll take a couple of days to achieve the desired "chill" you're likely used to getting when it was your primary fridge.

Hope this helps and Best Regards! Semper Fi!

Freezer freezes and won't cool either freezer or refrigerator.

On my GE side by side (model GSS20IEMDWW), the evaporator coils froze over due to constant running of the compressor. The compressor was constantly running due to a faulty temp sensor in the fresh food side of the unit. The sensor was apparently reading too hot, thus never signalling the computer that it should stop trying to cool.

This could be what the original poster was attempting to describe.

Freezer doesn't freeze in winter?

Domestic refrigerators nowadays are designed not to operate at temperatures less than 45 degrees. First, if it's 45 degrees in the house, people probably are not living there. 2nd, 45 degrees keeps food refrigerated. 3, if people are not living in a space, then they don't need to keep frozen food.

This is a result of the changes in refrigerants we've been going through since 1992.
If you want an outdoor freezer, buy one, and make sure it's designed to be used in a non conditioned space.

Freezer Problem

If it started to cool again the compressor was running. Check the condenser and make sure it is clean. Provide as much air movement through the garage as possible . 100 degrees is a high temperature to be operating a refrigerator in.

Kenmore Side by Side Refrigerator, freezer doesn't work, refrigerator works

Unless specifically made for use in a garage most units won't work properly. The owners manual should say what the temp range for proper operation is (usually 55F is the low range). This is because the refrigerator section doesn't need to be "cooling" to maintain 37F if the temps on the outside are below 55F. These things are made to work in a 70F room and will not work properly if under 55F. Stupid thing thinks it's cold enough so it will never turn on, the refer section will stay cold/cool due to outside temps but since the compressor never runs the freezer will just be the same temp as the refer section (at best). Sorry, but in order for a freezer or refrigerator to work in an unheated space it must have the temp control device controling the freezer section NOT the fresh food section. In other words, that model will not work in a garage unless the temps are above 55F always.
