Restore windows 2000 like-new state

I would like to turn back the clock on my laptop computer and start fresh but i do not own a windows 2k disk. i tried configsafe and it configured my comp back to its original state, but the memory from all those old programs was still all used up.
i'm not concerned about saving my old files and programs, i would just like to start all over again as if i opened my computer out of the box. i can re-install everything else. how do i do it?

thanks!

WINDOWS 2000 PRO DOES'NT HAVE A SYSTEM RESTORE FEATURE LIKE XP.YOU SAID THAT YOUR FILES AND OLD PROGRAMS ARE OF NO CONCERN TO YOU SO I WOULD SUGGEST SECURING A OEM COPY OF XP HOME VERSION FOR ABOUT $89.00 ON THE WEB.2000 PRO FULL VERSION IS MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE THAN XP HOME.IT IS ALSO MORE EXPENSIVE THAN XP PROFESSIONAL WHICH I STRONGLY RECCOMEND THAT YOU INSTALL OVER 2000 PRO.YOU CAN GET XP PRO FOR ABOUT$125.00 ON THE WEB.NOW,I FOUND A OEM COPY OF 2000 PRO A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO AT EBAY AND BOUGHT IT FOR $60.00.YOU PROBABLY CAN FIND 2000 PRO THERE BUT THE PRICES ARE PRETTY STEEP.IF YOU CAN FIND A AUCTION FOR A COPY THAT MIGHT BE YOUR BEST BET.GOOD LUCK.

Power connection to computer came out during shutdown yesterday. Today, turning on, it will not boot up.

You are going to need a clean boot up disk. You will have to get one mailed to you or you will have to use another computer to download one. This will get you back into a point that you can do a windows restore. This is going to get rid of all programs and start you fresh. I do, however, feel that you disk drive is going out or already shot. You should do a Chkdsk on it. (check disk). This will tell you if it is a hard drive error or not.

Forgot user name n password for Windows 2000 Professional

You will need the Windows 2k disc. However you won't be able to find one unless you check out like ebay. Win 2k has been EOL for years now. I would suggest even buying the lowest end computer for around $250-300 and it would be tremendously faster than what you have currently. You could also check around at pawn shops, mom and pop computer stores for cheaper ~$50-100 dollar comptuters that would be better than this. I wouldn't waste your time trying to fix such an old computer.

Welcome to Fixya

Looks like theres is a problem with the operating system already. You might need to restore the computer back to the factory state. Turn off the computer then press the button that sits beside the power button. Follow the on screen procedure to restore the computer.

How do you go about to format a toshiba l650 and reinstall windows 7

Hi! If you have the Windows 7 disc just insert it restart the computer. It will boot directly from the disc. Then follow the step by step instructions here.
If you don't have the Windows 7 disc, you have two ways to reformat your Toshiba computer.
Using Toshiba HDD Recovery Utility from the recovery partition
In case of a hard disk drive failure, you may be able to restore the drive to the factory default state using the on-disk Toshiba HDD Recovery Utility (in a special partition on the hard disk drive).
You can select restoring the entire hard disk drive to the factory default state, or restoring only the C: drive -- without affecting other partitions (for example, a D: drive) -- or changing the size allocated to your C: drive, and then restore it.
To recover your hard disk drive from a system failure using the utilities stored on your computers HDD, follow these steps:
  1. If the computer is running, shut it down -- by clicking Start, Shut Down, and again Shut Down.
  2. Press and hold the 0 (zero) key on your keyboard and then press the computers power switch. When the computer turns on, the Toshiba HDD Recovery Utility screen will appear, presenting three options:

Restore Original Factory Image (Recommended)
CAUTION:
Restoring a hard disk drive to its factory default state deletes all partitions on the hard disk drive and all data stored on those partitions. All of your files and information will be lost! Be sure to back up all important files first.
  1. Press 1 to restore your hard disk drive to its original factory default state. A confirmation message will appear, indicating that all data will be overwritten and lost during the restore process. Be sure to back up all important files before proceeding.
  2. Click Yes to begin the recovery. A message will appear once the operation is finished, indicating the HDD has been restored.
  3. Press any key to restart the computer.
* The options 2 & 3 are for advanced users.
Hard Disk Drive Recovery using Recovery CDs or DVDs
You may also wish to to run the Toshiba HDD Recovery Utility from Recovery CDs or DVDs that you have created.

Insert the first Recovery CD or DVD into your CD/DVD drive, and turn on the computer. Once the computer is running, the TOSHIBA HDD Recovery Utility screen will appear, presenting the same three options above. Again Press 1 to
restore your hard disk drive to its original factory default state. Click Yes to begin the recovery. Press any key to restart the computer.

Installing Drivers and Applications
The TOSHIBA Application Installer allows you to reinstall the drivers and applications that were originally bundled with your computer.
To reinstall drivers and applications:
  1. Double-click the "Toshiba Application Installer" icon on the Windows desktop. This utility may also be launched by clicking Start -->All Programs --> Hard Disk Recovery Utilities.

  2. Click "Next".
  3. Click the item(s) you wish to install. To select multiple items, hold down the Ctrl key as you click your selections.
  4. Click "Install".
  5. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation process.

Hope this helps.

When i turned on my laptop, the window did not start successfully. When start normally, it failed again.

Welcome to Fixya

If the screen is looping back with the same mesage then there is a huge possibility that the windows boot manager is alrady corrupted. This could be caused by several issues e.g recent software installation, hardware changes, data corruption or virus issue. Try to boot the computer using safe mode and runs system restore. Restore the computer back from the date where it is working fine. Turn off the computer and turn it back on. Keep on tapping F8 the moment you press the power button. Select safe mode, if same thing will happen after selecting safe mode then it means that there is no wat for us to restore the computer other than to use the recovery disk of the computer and restore the computer to the factory state.

Please let me know if you have further questions.

Is there a process by which this computer can be reset to its' factory settings erasing everything except factory installed programs? We purchased a new laptop and would like to give this to our son, but...

Yes there is, it depends on the brand. Lots of brands have what they call a restore partition that will restore the pc to its factory condition. Look for a message stating Press F11 or F12 for recover partition during the computers boot up. It will be during the blank and white part of the boot process (usually)

No restore cd

I have an Acer 3680 series laptop and it originally came with Windows Vista Basic (now I have Windows 7 32 bit on it).

But, anyway, on Windows XP, Vista, and 7 the restore is done by going to the help menus and typing in 'restore' or 'recover' whichever route you want to go.

Data is stored on the computer's hard drive that can take the computer all the way back to the day it was new, or to a freshly installed state of the operating system.

I hope this helps.

Upgrade

You will not be able to register it as it is alread registered to the other computer, unless they are exactly alike. Then using a hard drive  backup  and restore program is the best and easiest way to do it.  Just back up the date from the XP on the restore it to the 2k one. Again .This wil only work if they are exactly alike, down to the CPU type plus.
