You are typing on a keyboard made for typing Swiss German; that means the writings on the keys match what you get on the screen only if you activate the Swiss German keyboard layout.
You probably see a flag in the menu bar, indicating which layout is currently active. By clicking on it, you can switch to another layout or show the "Onscreen keyboard". To find on which keys are the various special characters, look at the onscreen keyboard while you play with the Option and Shift keys. Orange keys are special: they give access to a whole "family" of accented characters, e.g. Option-e puts an acute accent over the letter typed after it.
