Your problem is defected video card, fan is working no display, that is the symtoms, change it so it works better again..
Hey, yes the vga board has failed, its a very common problem in acer laptops, you can get a replacement part from www.acerparts.com im not sure if they ship into us but for europe thats where I get my parts.
my acers vga failed two times, ones within warranty and 12months after that, I have to say that acer products are really bad quality, I'm not sure about the latest models but from what I've seen the vga chipsets have real issues with the motherboards and keep failing over and over again.
I have not looked inside your model but the vga is either integrated into the motherboard = that means the repair will cost the whole motherboard, better to buy a new one.
if your model has a removeable vga like mine does, then you can consider changeing it to a new one. contact acer parts.
One of the covers in the bottom is the memory, one is network and last one I don't remember.
here are the contact details if your acer is out of warranty
http://www.acerparts.com/contact_us.php
if your acer has warranty you can get it repaired for free by acer. contact your dealer in that case.
Please accept my solution, if you have any questions use the ask me button, as I really know what I'm talking about since I've had the same problem you are haveing, I can asnwer all the questions you may have.
Thanks,
Ekse
parts for your model are at
http://www.acerparts.com/index.php?cPath...
you will have to contact acer parts directly, it may be that the vga is build into the motherboard or then the vga parts are not listed.
If its build into the motherboard you will have to replace the whole motherboard.
In my opinion if you have to replace the whole motherboard its time to buy a new laptop.
if you have no further questions please accept my solution.

Check if any loose connection inside and memory well fitted
Most likely you will be unable to change the video display without changing the motherboard. I would check the memory first. Take the memory out and put it back in again. If you get the same thing and you have more than one module, check each module individually and see if that helps.
Do you have more than one memory module in the memory access door?
What is your zip code?
Ekse is right. He accurately found your problem and your solution. Please accept his solution. Good luck!

Its might be lockup. Take the battery out, disconnect the power cord then press and hold the power button about 7 second to perform component discharge. put back the battery and the power, Turn on the system

Assuming the problem is the video display since I get 1 long and two short beeps on the aspire 5100 of acer. how can I determine that is really the problem, can I change out the videodisplay, and if so how, and roughly how much does it run.
That did not help.
You have suggested taking memory out individually. How do I do that.tks
Going inside puts me on the spot. Can you suggest someone in La Habra, Fullerton, Hacienda La Puente area of US that could check it...Tellephone helps. Tks.
beneath laptop, I have around three accessible doors, one for the battery, one which says contains transmitter moudle atheros ar5bmb5,, and then one unmarked...
can I access the laptop somehow even if video display is down?
If it is the vga board, I have an acer apire 5102wlmi, bought in Sweden, which vga board is the correct one to purchase
