I had this problem with this specific machine. These answers have all been general to any VCR. The Mitsubishi HS-U448 has its motor underneath the machine. You don't have to remove the top cover at all. Just remove the bottom plate and spin the motor (the correct direction) to completely eject the tape.

depending on th einternal design of the vcr. look for the loading/unloading mech, by finding the blak rubber belt that is looped from the motor to a pully. now turn it one way. it may thak 25 to 50 complete rotations of the belt. try turning both ways, one will load & 1 will unlaod. good luck.

Unplug the TVCR, take the cover off, find the motor (probably on the
right side of the mechanism) and turn its shaft with your fingers until
you have run the tape back out. Now plug it back in and try it
again with a scarificial tape. If it continues to fail, replace
all the rubber belts in the mechanism.

When a tape won't eject, the problem can be caused by several things. The most common problem is that the belt that operates the eject mechanism is slipping and not allowing it to eject the tape. This can be fixed by either using a re-grip solution on the belt or have the belt replaced. Another possibility is that the tape is caught aroung the spindle guides that pull the tape around the video head. If the tape is caught in the spindles, this will affect playback performance. The heads could be dirty too. Another possibility for poor playback is a slipping idler wheel. The idler wheel is a rubber tire that pivits between the tape sending and pickup reels. It's a key part during playback, fast forward & rewind. The idler tire can also be treated with a re-grip solution or be replaced. Belts are inexpensive but sometimes difficult to get to. Most of the repair expense will be in the labor.

to answer this one ". The tape is stuck, won't eject and I'd like to get it out without damaging the VCR unit."...open unit, find motor that moves tape ejector and spin that motor by hand (power off)
the other problem, "the VCR will not insert a tape. It keeps rejecting it."...open unit and fully turn ejection motor until home position is reached...this is a home sensor switch not being activated.

Unplug the unit and take the cover off. Hopefully there will be enough clearance so you can get to the tape. Try to find the motor and belt that is responsible for operating the eject mechanism. The motor will look like a shiny cylinder, about the diameter of a quarter and will have a plastic pulley attched to the shaft. You can rotate the pulley and belt with your fingers and manually eject the tape. If the tape is around the spindles and video head, you will need to manually move the mechansim that retracts the spindles and returns the tape to the cartridge. While you may be successful in getting the tape out, you need to find out what caused the problem in the first place. Putting in another tape will most like become stuck again unless the problem is identified and resolved. Also look for a broken spring or cracked gear (missing teeth) in the eject mechanism.
