When you are trying to connect to a router from a laptop, you always need the SSID as well as a password. The SSID and password are created on the main desktop when you first set up the router. Whoever set it up knows the password. If you forgot the password, you can always turn the security off and allow open access which will not ask for a password. Either way, you will have to go back on your main computer, and run the program that controls the router.

When you installed the router, you provided a password/passphrase for connecting to your wireless network.
Apparently you didn't write this down or someone else set up the router.
If you don't have access to the admin console on the router either, you'll have to do a factory reset of the router to allow you to set it all up all over again.
This time, make a note of your passwords.

How do i reset the password to my 2wire router an connect a wireless laptop

Is your 2Wire Router by AT&T, if so the password is on the side or bottom of the router. Look for Network Key or Network Password on the router.

Once you have that, you simply go to your laptop, and try connecting to your wireless router. It will be the one with the strongest signal if you don't know your SSID. Once you click connect, it will ask you for the password/passphrase or key, type in what you found on the router.

There is really no need to reset the password unless you have some other reason. But there are 2 ways to reset the router's password, you will need to have a computer that is connected to the router with a network cable (most times this is a desktop already connected). Then you will need to know the router's IP Address to type into a internet browser. It will be a set of numbers such as 192.168.1.1 that you would type into the address bar where you normally type www to get to a web page. Once you have the right ip address you will need the router's login id and password. Most times this is set to the default unless whoever set it up changed it. Once you are in the router then you go to the wireless and wireless security area to change the password. If you don't know the ip address or the userid and password for the router, then you can google it on the internet.

If your internet provider is AT&T you might be better off calling them to reset your router's password. They can walk you through it.

Don't know my password

Are you looking for wireless network password or Linksys router password?
If you are trying to connect to the wireless network then it might be asking you for the wireless network key or the passphrase.
You can open the setup page of the router and check the wireless settings.
Read Wireless network key WEP WPA

My daughter cant access my router cause it ask for a password

I take it you are trying to get on a wireless network with her computer.
Sounds like your network is password protected (it should be).
You need to find that password and give it to her. If you don't know how to access the router from your computer, go to the website of the manufacturer of the router and look for the instructions. The particular thing you are looking for is wireless security setup.

We have wireless 2wire802 trying to access Internet from another laptop computer. It keeps asking for password. I don't remember what the password is. How can I find out the "hint" so that I...

If you are trying to connect to the wireless from this said PC and you do not remember the wireless password, you will have to reset the router and set it up again. This time, write down the password in a safe place, or use something you know you will not forget... Drivers license number, License plate number..... something.

I need to reset this so i can lock it i suppose?

If there has been a password already set that you don't know you will need to reset to factory defaults. If there isn't one look here: http://portforward.com/default_username_password/Belkin.htm and find your router and try the default username and password. If you do end up resetting to factory defaults then look at the link above and use the default username and password to get into your router.

I lost my D-Link Password?

If it's the wireless password and you can still access the settings, you can change or add an additional wireless password (so you don't have to worry about changing it on your laptop). Or it might display the password on the security page, if it isn't asterisked out.

If you lost the administration password, you'll have to press the reset button, its a hole in the back of the router or bottom, try shoving a paperclip point into that. Hold it down for 30 seconds. Then, in your web browser, go to 192.168.1.1, leave the user ID blank and type admin for the password. Since everything is set back to default, you'll need to completely redo your security settings and change the wireless password in your laptop to comply with your changes.

Hope this helps!

Wireless not working, asking for password??

Open your web browser and go to the URL http://192.168.1.1. This will take you to a web page with a popup box which asks you to enter a username and password to login required to login to your router. On older Linksys routers, the username is set to "blank" and the password is set to "admin" (without the quotes). On newer Linksys routers, both the default username and the default password are set to "admin". Click on login. You have logged in to the Administrator account and are now able to access and change the Security WEP password. Remember to also add the new password to your wireless adaptor on your laptop when prompted. Good Luck...

Forgot password

To ilysurita, cj_mom, top_shutta…
First can I clarify what is meant by a ‘lost password’ …. The original poster here is asking about the password needed to login to the router configuration pages.

If you know the password to login to the router configuration pages, you can still get access to the network key (also known as passphrase, WPA or WEP key, PSK, pre-shared key) – which is the key Windows asks for to connect a new computer to the network. It will be found under a heading like ‘Wireless Security’ or ‘Wireless Settings’ within the router configuration pages. For this model, you can find the router configuration pages by typing www.routerlogin.net (or .com) into a web browser, or http://192.168.0.1

If you don’t know the username/password to login to your router, try using the defaults – for this model, they are admin and password.

However, if the router login username/password has been forgotten, the only way to regain access to the router configuration settings is to reset the router, as described in my posting above. I don’t know of any shortcuts to this one. :(

If you have to resort to this, you might want to wait for whoever set up the router to help with this. This is because resetting the router will remove all your settings – password, network key, ISP connection info – so you will lose your internet connection altogether until it is set up again.

On the other hand, if you’re willing to spend some time and patience, you can have a go yourself.

If you have your original setup CD this may contain a software wizard to walk you through it. If not, you might be able to download a setup wizard from the router manufacturer’s website, along with a quick installation guide (and a manual).

The Netgear site also has very clear troubleshooting and support pages which will help with setup, even if you don’t have any setup software:
http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/wgr614v9.asp

Make sure you use a wired connection. Also, print off all the information you need before you begin, as you will not be able to access the internet while you are setting up the router.
Good luck whatever you decide to do
