I have the exact same problem. However I don't think the problem is
the oper. system. The computer shuts down at random; many times it
won't even boot. I originally thought maybe their was a loose ram
stick, so i tried replacing it and had no luck. Then I tried removing
the hdd and tried to get into the BIOS, but it still sometimes would
shut off; meaning that the o/s can't be the problem.
It still works sometimes, but other times just shuts off or
won't make it past the initial boot screen. I'm thinking it has to be
a problem with something in the power supply. It's seems like the
power just completely cuts off, i've never seen anything like it.

if your getting your dell logo it means your disply is working fine
may be u r windows is not working properly just try to up-date your windows with any windows disk

When was the last time you used it, and were there any problems? To find the solution to this problem is a matter of elimination. You should check the following:
Step 1 - Power
- Try an alternative power adapter
- Try plugging in your laptop to an alternative power supply
WARNING - BEFORE PROCEEDING, PLEASE FOLLOW THE FOLLOWING SAFETY PRECAUTIONS!
1. REMOVE THE POWER ADAPTER FROM YOUR LAPTOP
2. REMOVE ALL PERIPHERALS
3. WEAR A WRIST-GROUNDING STRAP, AND CONNECT IT TO AN UNPAINTED, METAL SURFACE. IF ONE IS NOT AVAILABLE, TOUCH AN UNPAINTED METAL SURFACE TO DISCHARGE ANY STATIC FROM YOUR BODY
Step 2 - Remove and reset basic hardware items
Remove and reseat the items mentioned below in the order they're mentioned:
- AC adapter
- Battery
- Memory
- Hard drive
