Presario V5000 -- Junk from BEST BUY

Bought a laptop, got the show computer since they were out of stock. Geek Squad promised to remove all Best Buy stuff ... wipe there stuff out like it had never been there. Got it home, found all kinds of Best Buy stuff but didn't affect functionality, had plenty of space, didn't bother taking it back. REGRET!!! Fast forward two years ... I NEED THE SPACE!!! Don't know what to do. Don't know what I can wipe out & what I need for the computer to work. Can't take it back to store & don't want to pay someone to do something this simple. Please help!! What can I do to get all this stuff off? What exactly do I NEED to keep the computer working??

Thanks,
Colleen

Use a boot able copy of RIPLinux 6.2 go into your Compact bios (F10 key) and set CDROM as first device to boot up.

Boot 6.2 and execute GRUB loader. Select (Partition #2) and wait.
You will see a Compact screen appear with a restore to factory. Just wait while it reformats partition #1 (yes you will lose all the BB junk).
When done you will have a factory set operating system XP Home or Pro.

Well Colleen, I thank you for writing this as detailed as possible, You can always run a disk cleanup, (Start > My computer > Right click C: > Properties > Disk Cleanup, Under General Tab)

That will get rid of junk, Or you could Defrag the computer
(Start>My computer> Rightclick C: > Properties > Tools Tab > Defragment now)
Defrag will take all sorts of junk in a file and sort them in a folder, giving your computer more memory, You could also manually delete everything by going to the root of it all, Or you could buy more memory.

BEST BUY GEEK SQUAD ROUND-UP

I can confirm that this level of incompetence is quite common. It is Best Buy's standpoint that Geek Squad is an extension of their sales strategies, thus their hiring practices reflect that standpoint. Many Geek Squad "Agents" are hired or transfered to Geek Squad based upon their merits as sales people, NOT technicians. This strategy, combined with the pathetically low pay level (which any certified or experienced technician would laugh at) results in untrained staff programmed to follow certain sales strategies. In my experience, many of my fellow employees were on the same technical level as the customers across the counter seeking support.

Best Buy did settle with Winternals / Sisinternals and integrated many of their tools into Geeks Squad's authorized repair disk (Much of which is purely automated). At some level, Best Buy has internally recognized that their Geek Squad staff is mostly unqualified and have catered their corporate licensed / developed software to reflect the situation. This not only showed Geek Squad's incompetency (again) but also shows how news media is more interested in scaring you than actually helping you. It's good that the big chains got this bit of negative press on a local station but you should also applaud the store that did it for free - at least post their name and address and show an interview with the owner or clerk.

Mom and pop shops are usually run by people that are hobbyists first and business-folk second. Whenever someone at my company asks for personal computer help that I don't care to deal with I send them to a small shop in our town - one with Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Netscape Navigator and Word Perfect stickers are mostly-faded on the window. I know they'll be treated honestly and fairly. No charge just to examine a computer to add onto the actual repair.

It's sad how many people/companies are more interested in making the most money from a problem instead of trying to solve it fairly.
and LASTLY "1st thing that video is at least 8 years old I remember seeing it when I was young in highschool."
Perhaps you are thinking of the PC World investigation of major retail computer service departments? I remember reading it long ago:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/3764-6/pc_repair_ripoff.html
The article is from Mid 1998. A damaged IDE cable was part of the problems on their test PCs.

From the article:
"Of 55 problems tested across 20 stores, a total of 30 were misdiagnosed, ignored, or went otherwise unfixed. Best Buy and Computer City each missed on 9 of 15 tries."

THE REAPIR WE WERE TALKING ABOUT WAS A 10 TO 20 DOLLAR FIX :()

A confidential settlement has ended litigation initiated by Winternals over copyright infringement regarding Geek Squad's use of its ERD Commander software.

The lawsuit should end following a July 7th motion from Winternals lawyer David Weaver, who cited a settlement agreement reached between the company and Best Buy, which owns Geek Squad.

Instead of a lengthy lawsuit, Winternals now has a three-year agreement in place with Best Buy. This will permit its Geek Squad of tech assistance personnel to lawfully use licensed programs from Winternals and Sysinternals. This includes the ERD Commander system recovery tool.

The problems for Best Buy and Geek Squad started in February 2006. Winternals had conducted training sessions for Geek Squad employees, as part of its negotiations with Best Buy to license software for its 12,000 Geek Squad workers.

Then the negotiations ended abruptly. Coupled with the admission from employees of Geek Squad and Best Buy that they had been using unlicensed copies of ERD Commander, Winternals began to investigate.

They set up systems needing repair in multiple locations, and put calls in to Geek Squad for assistance. Geek Squad staffers either used unlicensed copies of ERD Commander, or had them in their possession.

In April 2006, Winternals sued in US District Court in western Texas for copyright infringement, circumvention of copyright protections systems, and misappropriation of trade secrets.

HP netbook closed during update, now black screen. No discs to reinstall (no disk drives) really stuck, thanks :)

Disc Drives can be rented/bought at stores such as Best Buy, Rent-a-center (or some other rental store). Going to a tech support at a place like best buy (Geek Squad) will have people who can re-install your software.

NEED SPACE!!!

This is a problem only you can solve. Go to CONTROL PANEL / ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS. Select the programs you do not want and start uninstalling them. Some of the names may seem a bit obscure and require some research. HP does install a lot of junkware.

DO NOT uninstall updates.

Reboot periodically and defrag the C: drive.

Go to http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=&product=1832426&lang=&

Order the correct Recovery Disk Set for your machine, it should cost less than $16. Do it now while thay are still available.

Now you can strip the D: Recovery Partition and use that space for data files.

You probably have a 4200 RPM hard drive. If the time comes when you need to do a recovery or just want more space, buy a larger, faster replacement drive. 7200 RPM is preferred. Installation is very easy - 6 screws.

Put your existing drive in an external USB case, they only cost about $10.

Your V5000T is an excellent machine and should give many years of productive use.

ACER LAPTOP

Generally most OEM (Original equipment manufactures') will not replace an individual key. This practice is common because this can be classified as "cosmetic damages". However, since the unit was purchased at Best Buy (I checked the serial number) the Geek Squad counter at your local Best Buy will replace the keyboard for you free of charge under your warranty.

A.R.C.H.I.E. is the demonstration software used on all Windows-based PCs sold at Best Buy that are used as demonstration units. The software is not designed to be installed on any PC other than those being used within the store.

Unfortunately, the removal of A.R.C.H.I.E. without the original disc (which is provided monthly to the stores from the corporate offices) is going to be nearly impossible. You have two solutions in this case:

1. Utilize the PC's recovery methods (most likely recovery partition, however you might have a model that came with recovery discs as well. The A.R.C.H.I.E. software prohibits most recovery disc creators from working properly). Note that for this method to work, you must be able to start the recovery process outside of Windows.
2. Bring the computer (along with its AC adaptor, if it is a laptop) to any Geek Squad precinct (any Best Buy store or standalone Geek Squad) for uninstallation of the A.R.C.H.I.E. software (without damage to the underlying operating system). This should be a free service as it is THEIR software running that requires removal for normal operation of the computer, and per company SOP should have been removed prior to sale. This is the preferred method, however you might not have access to a Geek Squad precinct and need it done before you will have access to a precinct again.
