The internal battery is located under the cover for the AA batteries compartment.  The internal battery holder is located next to the middle battery of the line of three batteries.  The end of the holder has the internal battery size printed on it (CR 1220).

The memory card does not stay inserted into it's slot and the camera shoes a memory card error.

Hi, I'm going to give you a link to a basic user guide.

http://www.google.ca/#hl=en&source=hp&biw=1224&bih=834&q=canon+powershot+s3+is+pdf+manual&aq=0v&aqi=g-v1&aql=&oq=Canon+PowerShot+S3+IS+PDF+Manual&gs_rfai=&fp=6a0673dc5c3f3912

It's a small PDF file which has a diagram on the correct orientation of the SD card and batteries I think the actual owners manual is lacking in these diagrams.
I think though that you are attempting to install the memory card the incorrect way.

Also I'm going to include a great diagram for the SD card locking switch that if in the wrong position won't allow your to format a new card to the camera.

This should solve your problem don't forget to format your card to teh camera before using.

Memory card error canon powershot S3 IS

Sounds like the camera may need to be sent into canon to be fixed. I had to do that once- they allow you to track the camera from the moment they receive it- till the moment it is fixed. It was not so bad.

I have a canon power shot s3is and when i put a sd card into it it says memory card error. i've tried a number of other sd cards it seems not to read any card. just randomly started.

It is likely that an internal metal contact (one or several ones) inside the sdcard reader are bent, or damaged.

You will need to have your camera reviewed by a qualified technician to have it repaired, since it requires open the camera and evaluate the sd card reader mechanism.

Best regards,

The internal BIOS battery has run down and is causing this error. Don't attempt to fix this yourself. Canon will fix this for you for free, with free shipping, regardless of your camera's warranty status. See and print out the following advisory:

When I insert a memory card, all of a sudden I get "999" as the number of pictures available in stead of the accurate number. I have a G& and have never had problems before.

It may be fault with your memory card .

There is a chance that your memory card might have been corrupted

Also ensure that your battery is properly charged

There is also chance of mechanical problem existing in your camera .

Is your camera canon s3 or s5 or some other model

Memory card error

On the old Powershot S400, this error was caused by a dead internal "clock" button battery. Fixing it required simply replacing the battery. But before you attempt to do that, would first suggest trying a different memory card.

Memory Card Errors with Canon PowerShot S3

There most definitely is a solution to this problem. Follow this link for a step by step fix for the memory card error. It requires taking the camera apart but if the warranty is expired you have nothing to lose. Fix worked fine for me.

Memory card error

Try a smaller memory card size . I was trying to install a 4gb card and the guy at Kmart told me to try a 1gb card and that fixed the locked card error . No where in the instruction book did it address this problem.
