"Remove Output" light keeps flashing even though there is nothing in the feeder tray or jammed. I've shut the printer and the computer down and the same light flashes again as soon as it starts back up.

This error is caused by the the flap on the right hand side of the output tray (the tray the paper feeds into once it has printed). It becomes stuck in the up position and sends a false positive error to the printer. One "work around" for this is to tape a quarter to the plastic flap. This keeps the flap in a down position, thus negating the false positive. The other option is to call dell laser printer tech support to get it fixed. <If it is still under warranty>
That little output flap mentioned by others had actually fallen off my printer. It is a bit tricky to get it on. Definitely need a strong light to see what you're doing when you fit it back in. There's a small hole all the way back in the rear-right corner of the output bin, then two little hooks (one facing forward, the other backward). The key thing is that the little piece of plastic that sticks out opposite the big flap slides BETWEEN two little metal pieces. That's the sensor. That little black plastic has to be between there to tell the printer that the output bin is not full and just keep printing.
Thanks to the person who suggested taping a quarter on to the flap to hold it down. Here's what it looks like. Not pretty, but it works.
There is a 2nd sensor that also controls the Paper Jam light. It is located on the paper feed path under the Imaging Drum. Open the front door and remove the Drum/Toner assembly. It should be in a free floating up position. Mine was stuck in the down position and when I freed it the error went away.

Just had this happen to no less than 5 printers within two days.
Faulty Paper sensor on top right of the 1720 printer.
Take the top of the printer off, There are 3 screws in the front and one on each side.Take the cartridge out and the sides off. Be carefull when you take the top off due to the wires.
You will see where a red, blue and black wire leads up to the light sensor.
Remove the plastic flange switch and leave it off. Use electrical tape and completely fill in the light sensor area making sure the tape will not fall out.
Re-assemble
OK, after I posted the fix I found out that the sensor is needed if you do double sided printing. It checks for the end of the paper so it will know when to reverse itself to print on the other side.
So if you do a lot of double sided printing, I would not suggest this fix.
If you only do double sided printing on occassions you can still manually do it.

You may not believe it but out of frustration, I smacked the printer and it completed the printing task. And now, whenever the light flashes, I smack the printer and it completes printing. This is amusing but not acceptable. I will call Dell today. Any other ideas?
There is a sensor on the right hand side of the tray. The sensor tells you when the output tray is full. I have seen on many 1720s the sensor gets stuck in the up position, cause the printer to think the output tray is full. Most of the time just flipping the sensor up and down a few times will cause it to stop sticking. Pushing the sensor back into the down position will clear the error.
The problem is the little output flap could be stuck or the sensor that the flap controlls is faulty... I;m working on one right now... Not sure what the fix is, but it's related to that!
I found another solution that's even easier. It probably has the same caveat about double sided printing, though for me that's a non-issue:
1. Always unplug a printer if you're working on it. 2. Open the right side of the printer. The "right side" if you're looking at it. If you open the front door of the printer where the toner goes, there's two gray plastic flanges. Push those open and open the side - it's on a hinge in the back.3. The gray, steel box that has lots of wires going into it contains the main circuit board. Unscrew the 4 screws holding the cover on and remove it.4. Find the red/blue/black wire bundle coming down from the top cover - unplug that cable going into the circuit board.
Done.

Sorry but this is not working.....after printing the 3. page, the printer get in the slow motion, and printing one page take 1 minute :).... Other solution????

My Dell 1720 just started doing the same thing. Is there a fix?
Dell 1720 - When I try to print the Flashing: Remove Ouput light comes one. I have to touch the little square tab on the top right side of the output slot in order to get the printer to print.
I did exactly what you said that little tab I moved it up and it printed just fine...I will have to call dell for a replacement...
I am trying to explain to someone what tab they should be looking for. Is this a button you push or a tab you pull open?
the remove output light is flashing have rebooted the computer and the printer no change, the tab for the output tray is broken can the printer work without it
flashing remove output
mY dell printer 1720DN says it has a paper jam but there is no paper jam in printer. Please let me know what I can do, It will not print
I have the same problem. The load output light is flashing. I have removed/added paper. There is no jam. I shut it down and the light starts flashing again when I turn it back on.
