You may have a broken solder connection - some sort of broken or intermittent connection. Common problems are broken solder connections at the power jack (inside the laptop). If this is the case, the laptop will need to be disassembled for repairs to be made. Note: There are online sites with DC power jacks available, crossed by Model number.
Wiring can also break (external to the laptop) especially if the wire/cord is flexed frequently (like when wrapped up to put into the laptop bag). Sometimes there is no external evidence of a break.
Also, if indeed your laptop has a pig-tale as you describe, the jack where you connect might be worn out- just not making contact with the plug.
Find someone with a little tech savvy, if necessary, and locate the exact nature of the bad connection, and make repairs from there.
