Air handler only blows air for 3-5 minutes before shut off & not cycling frequently

Dear Chillm,

Amana 13 Seer heat pump, entire system 11 y.o. incl air handler in attic. 2.5 ton unit on 1 story brick ranch approx 1400 sq ft, 8" blown insulation in attic, w/ peak roof and eave vents.

When outside unit comes on, air handler will only blow through vents for about 3 to 5 minutes before it shuts off - will then come on again and blow hard for about 1 minute. Air coming out of interior vents is cool, just won't blow long enough to cool house. (N GA - temps in the mid 80's - heavily tree shaded house.)

Sounds like it could be a very weak run capacitor on the blower motor. Run capacitors are sized specifically to the needs of the motor. When a run cap gets weak, the motor trys to compensate for it by drawing more power. More power draw = more heat in the motor, then the motor will overheat and shut off to protect itself. When the motor cools off it will automatically restart and run until it overheats again. Keep in mind that I am a technician that normally diagnoses equipment in a hands on manner. There are many practices and concepts that transcend all air conditioning systems but it is a constantly evolving industry. I live in south eastern WA and I don't see Amana units except as window units. It is possible to have something else causing this problem (faulty thermostat, failing thermal relay(if used), problem with electronic controls(if used)) there are a lot of potential variables

Amana heat pump 13 seer split system when in heat pump mode once the thermostat is satisfied the head pressure on the high side shoots up to 600

410 a runs at a much higher pressure then r-22. that is still very high. it would take a temperture over 150 degrees to produce it on a idle system.

3 ton heat pump with piston in air handler. After unit shuts down it makes loud fluid flow noise for about 2 minutes

adding a tvx will not help. the sound you here is the pressure equalizing and that has got to happen for the compressor to start again the next time. A tvx will give you a higher efficiency because it can adjust to changing temperature conditions. Only way i know to quiet the noise is to try to insulate the lines better.

Difference in seer

i would check fan speed. it's probably on high. you might be moving more air with new system. a dirty evaporater on old unit woud have gave you a larger temperture drop.

I installed 18 seer heat pump&air handler with communicating stat,i turned power on to air handler, not heat pump, stat learned air handler&heaters properly.turned power on to heat pump, stat does not...

Dont know what equipment you have but yes of course there is a fix. Turn power off to air handler. cycle power to heat pump and be sure the board is configured properly to match your outdoor unit. Then turn power on to indoor unit and likely go through system setup once again. provide model numbers of all communicating components if more problems.

Where is the reset button on an Amana ASZ14 unit?

I don't think the Amana ASZ14 Heat Pump has a reset switch, but you can still reset it by resetting the power (when it's not running... turn your thermostat OFF first).

To reset the power, locate your circuit breaker box. There should be a double-breaker for the Heat Pump and another double-breaker for the Air Handler. Turn them both off for at least 2-3 minutes. Then flip them back on and turn your thermostat back ON.

You're thermostat may also have a RESET button that you can push. I have to reset mine every time I change the batteries in it.

Over heating compressor

The seer rating is not what you should be concerned about. You have to be sure that the condensing unit matches the evap BTU ratings. If the evap is too small, it acts as a restriction to the system. Low back pressure, which is inadiquate return freon flow, will cause the compressor to over heat.
Hope this helps

Am having a Tappan Split system heat pump installed. Proposal was for a 14 SEER system including a FTBD042K heat pump and a BCS2M48C variable speed air handler. However Actual equipment installed is...

i dont think so that variable speed air handler is a nightmare when(not if) that motor goes bad its 700.00 to 900.00 the regular 3 speed one your getting 125.00 and it will last 10 to 15 years ....... if you realy want fun install a 17 seer system ,you will have your repair guy on speed dial
