Won't scan legal documents properly

When I scan a legal document, it comes out as letter size. How can I fix this?

  • Anonymous Aug 06, 2008

I've already done this. Still doesn't work, and the problem is isolated only to scanned legal size docs to MY DOCUMENTS, not USB, not email.

Make sure that you set the paper size in the setup menu for legal - 8.5 x 14 for the manual paper feed.

For my solution please be aware you have to have the MFP on the scan mode for the scan feature to appear when you hit the menu button. I just noticed that.

I JUST FOUND YOU SOLUTION. THE SETTINGS FOR THE SCAN SIZE HAS TO BE SET IN THE PC USING THE NETWORK SCAN MANAGER. OPEN THE NETWORK SCAN MANAGER, GO TO PREFERENCES, GO TO THE BOTTOM TO SCAN PROPERTY AND ADJUST THE SCAN SIZE TO LEGAL. I JUST DID A LEGAL SCAN TO PFD USING THIS METHOD. I THINK THAT AS LONG AS THE SETTING UNDER THE NETWORK SCAN MANAGER REMAINS AS LEGAL EVERY DOCUMENT YOU SCAN IS SCANNED AS LEGAL. GOOD LUCK. LET ME KNOW IF IT WORKS FOR YOU.

Change legal size to letter size

scan it as a document, re-scale it in required size and save then print in required size.

these adjustments are in your word or office programs. if you need to make it to copy, insert your original in the scanner, in paper tray insert your letter paper, select copy and then re-size, this should do it "on the run".

HP LJ 3030 w/ USB connection to a computer with Windows Vista Home Premium Svc Pack 2. 64-bit Operating System. Problem: When I feed legal size docs through the doc feeder, the scan is letter size. I...

Hello Steve !
The only way scanning Legal documents on this HP LJ 3030 willbe using the ADF ( Automatic Document Feeder) since the size of the flatbed its only for letter.

So, after placing the document on the automatic document feeder theres a few setting you will need to change on the printer.

Number 1 : Go to Main Menu on the printer and look for System Setup, under system set up look for Paper setup, hit ok and now look for "Def. Paper Size" and set it to "Legal"

Number 2 : you should have a button on the printer control panel (Physical printer) that says " Reduce / Enlarge" , hit it and make sure the one selected is "original=100%"

Now just hit "Start Copy" and it print LEGAL ! it worked for me

Hope this help !

I can't get my printer to scan a legal size document, but have no problem with a letter size.

When you get your control panel for the document, you need to change the configuration document size. In mine, Legal comes right after Letter.

Cannot scan legal size documents. The scan goes through but it will only scan the letter size portion of the document and drops the rest of the text.

You likely need to install the Brother Scanner Resolution Improvement Tool. The description of the download states:

"This tool will expand the maximum scanning resolution capability and allow you to scan legal size documents."

Letter size document scans as legal size document

This is software setting issue. Just check your settings, if a 'default' button is available in the software, press it and then select your required settings. Some softwares dont accept the new settings unless the 'default' is pressed.

Won't recognize legal size paper

I have a Brother MFC-8840Dn (full legal-size flatbed as well as document feeder). I use Windows XP Pro and a USB connection. I'm not sure my fix works with other Brother models or different Windows operating systems, but it's a way to start troubleshooting at least.

I've always been able to print legal-sized pages from word processing or spreadsheet programs and receive legal-sized faxes. But I never could make legal-sized photocopies or PDF scans. The image was always cut off at Letter size. The fix is a Brother Utility set-up setting:

*** Go to Start / All Programs / Brother / MFL-Pro Suite MFC 8840Dn / Scanner Utility. (This link may also be called something like Scanner Settings.)
*** At the "Maximum Scanning Size", select "Legal" instead of "Letter/A4".
*** Click OK and restart your PC for the new setting to take effect.

It's like magic -- I can now scan a full legal-sized PDF, whether on the flatbed or through the ADF. I also tried a compressed TIFF scan and it came out fine.

**** Make sure your software and/or Brother Control Center scanning configurations are set to Legal if that's what you want for the particular image scan. The Brother Utility setting simply enables the option of choosing the larger legal-sized paper, which then allows the full legal-sized image scan, You always have to set your software to make that choice, just as you would to make and print smaller images on Letter, A4, envelopes, etc. (NOTE: I always start scans through software on my PC, like Adobe Acrobat or PaperPort, and the Utility Setting fix is working fine. However, I just tried pressing the SCAN button on the front panel of the MFC itself with a legal-sized document on the flatbed and through the document feeder. I still got Letter-sized image scans. So, there must be another setting somewhere for starting scans directly from the MFC that I'll locate later.)

I was about to buy a different brand of scanner because of the frustration with legal-sized images. It's like having a new scanner now :) I hope this Utility Setting info helps you troubleshoot your legal-sized image problem.
