Yes, but you will need a program capable of making dvds also, such as PowerDVD or CDCreator. I use CDBurnerXP (don't worry about the name, it works for all Windows OS's) because it's free.

Simple solution:

Situation
There is a yellow exclamation mark for CD/DVD drives in Device Manager. The device status in the properties of the driver might indicate an error code, for example 32, 37, or 39. Or the drive simply does not appear in My Computer or Device Manager.

Solution

To solve the issue, you have to edit the Windows Registry:
Click Start, then Run, type REGEDT32 and click OK.
Locate and then remove the following registry values:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlCl ***{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}LowerFilters

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlCl ***{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}UpperFilters

Close Registry Editor.
Reboot the system for the changes to take effect.

Note: Some programs are unable to detect the CD/DVD drive after these steps. To solve this, simply re-install the program in question, eg: usually your recording software. Also, in few instances the order in which the programs are (re-)installed can make a difference.

What reason:- do not read written cd/dvd bt original cd/dvd can be read Model:- HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4241N Driver of Lenivo Laptop

- first try to clean the lens (use only a cleaner disk, no other stuff)
- second try to read a cd or dvd written by this unit on LOWEST speed alowed, let's say 24x for cd and no more than 8x for dvd
- if that does not solve the problem, a firmaware update for your drive will fix that

no you will needa dvd-rw unit to burn dvd's cd-rw/dvd-rom will not burn a dvd being a dvd-rom

Cd\dvd is corrupted or missing (driver detectiv)

Download microsoft fixit from http://www.ziddu.com/download/6528022/MicrosoftFixit50027.msi.html and install it in your pc ,once its finished jst restart your pc and see it will work
