A web search suggested thihs would be the reason for the 21140 code>
Issue: "The selected paper size is not supported by your printer..." appears after selecting the Paper Size in the printer driver.
Solution: Use Fit-to-Page Printing (Windows)
Use Fit-to-Page Printing (Windows)
The Fit-to-Page function automatically resizes the image to fit the size of the page being used. Letter size image data, for example, will automatically be printed on 4" x 6" size paper. Paper sizes larger than the printer can handle will be available on the Page Setup of the printer driver but will not print unless the Fit-to-Page function is enabled.
Note: The Fit-to-Page Printing function is not available when Borderless Printing is selected.
For Windows Vista
For Windows XP Home Edition
For Windows XP Professional Edition
For Windows 2000/Me/98
(1) Select Fit-to-Page Printing.
(2) Select the size of original document created in application program. Paper sizes larger than the printer can handle will be available.
(3) Select the actual size of print media.
Hope this helps. Don't forget to vote. :)
Thank you for all of the information you provided. However, the problem is not with printing. It won't even scan, which is all she is trying to do.
Problem does not seem to relate to the error code provided. A simple fix would be to try to
connect the USB cable directly to a USB port on the computer. If you are connecting the device through a USB hub* or other USB device, disconnect it and try connecting directly to a USB port on the computer. If successful, the problem may have been with the device.
If that does not help I would make sure she has the updated drivers for her operating sysytem. See:

To lance_hill;
Thank you for your suggestions. I will tell her to try those things when she returns home and post an update as to whether or not it helped.
I was able to do some more searching and actually found a reference to scanning and the specific error code you reported
Issue: Error code 2, 140, 0 appears attempting to scan using MP Navigator EX .
Solution: Check the LCD (display) to ensure the unit is set to standby mode .
Printer Not In Standby Mode
Prior to printing, scanning or copying, the printer must be setup completely. If the operation panel displays an error, please take action to clear the error.
If the printer was just unpacked and displays a message, asking to set the language, press the left or right arrow or use the Easy-scroll wheel to select the preferred language and then press the
Only the language setting option is given in the on-line infomrationa as a setting that needs to be made to get to standby mode. May need to check the manual for any additonal settings to be made if this does not resolve the problem.
Would be interested in hearing if *********** has ben able to resolve the issue.

Thank you for all of the information you provided. However, the problem is not with the printer, it is the scanner. It won't even scan something and gives that code as well as the alarm.
