If you pressed and immediately released the smart/learn button and then walked over to the keypad and keyed in a 4 digit code and it doesn't work then the keypad is bad. The model number for the opener is on the door side of the motor unit and starts with 139.
Your opener was manufactured before there were safety sensors and there is no way to add them. You would be miles ahead to replace the opener with a new state of the art model.
On the back of the motor unit near where all those white wires go you will find the smart/learn button. Press and immediately release this button and then walk over to the keypad and key in any 4 digit code you like and press enter.
