My heater has been doing the same thing. You do not need to remove the grille cover to reset it. Poke a small screwdriver through a vent slot and reset the small red button. Allow the heater to cool off before resetting. When the vent reaches 260 degrees, the switch cuts off the furnace. The solution is to place a fan pointed at the top and side of the furnace so it doesn't get scorching hot. It happened to my furnace continually when a strong, cold west wind was hitting my roof-top vent. When the storm passed after two days, the furnace operated normally again.
Thank you for the fan idea. I'm trying it now. I'm so sick of freezing or smothering. I have to keep hitting the useless reset and it still won't work until it decides it's ready. The same model heater works just fine in another room. I know my house is not tight enough to have not enough fresh air for the heater to keep working.
Awesome: "Poke a small screwdriver through a vent slot and reset the small red button."
Saved me the hassle of having to research how to remove the heater housing to access the reset button or a $99+ service call and potential scheduling delay.
Thanks much (fiya fiya fiya emojis)

SOURCE: Williams wall non-elec gas heater. Black copper wire tagged thermostat?
First make sure this is a heater set up for a remote mounted thermostat. If so, the gas valve has 3 screws labeled TH (thermostat) and TP (thermopile) that's the flame sensor with 2 wires coming off it, I don't know where the goofy name comes from. there will be one screw that has both, usually the top one. Wire accordingly. The new valves have a solenoid on the bottom. this connects to the high temp. sensor up top. It has 2 wires on it, one connects to the thermostat wire, the other goes to the screw with TH and TP. Or you can skip it and connect the wire from the back of the valve to the Th and TP screw. Make sure the thermostat wires aren't pinched somewhere, thus eliminating the thermostats control.
SOURCE: How to reset vent safety switch
the reset is at the top left side of the furnace. take the cover off n press the red button. the switch could be failing but CHECK drafting through the furnace. hold a flame at the top of the furnace n make sure its pulling inward. u could have a blocked vent pipe or vent cap which will cause excessive heat n tip the safety switch. good luck!

if your old furnace is faulty replace the unit for safety and efficiency. it will pay for itself in energy.
SOURCE: Williams gravity vented wall furnance - where is the pilot?
Its in the bottom of the heater behind the vent cover . I don't know where you are but your local gas utility will come out and lite this for free.
