GE Microwave Model # JVM1650CH01. I had a fire in the microwave from a baked potato on a paper plate. There is no power to the microwave. Is there a thermal fuse or what is the most common fix for this problem? Would the part # TGS-880 be the fix? Thank you Steve

Sc7782,

Yes there is a fuse and odds are you blew it. It is a special fuse which must be replaced by a like unit. I have a tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r4220078-repair_dead_microwave which will walk you through the process as well as tell you where to get the correct parts. If there are additional problems I also have links to other tips which should be helpful.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the great rating.

While baking a sweet potato, the potato exploded and caught on fire. The microwave no longer works.a fire bro

I haven't heard of such a thing. You must have cooked it until there was no moisture left in the potato. That would also account for the failure of the oven. It would be the same as no load in the oven.
A thermal protect part is your current problem.

GE microwave not heating, sensor error.

first suspect is the inverter board (power) and magnatron a distant second----in either case the part involved unless an expensive unit is pricey.

GE MICROWAVE JVM1860CD NO POWER

It is time to replace the microwave oven, it is 11 years old and prices in microwaves has dropped considerably. To repair the old! magnetron would need to be replaced, "most expensive part" and other unknown problems would need to be addressed.

BAked Potato caught on fire in GE Microwave

Fuse is behind the control panel. Has cavity sensors and a magnatron thermal disc also. Start with the fuse and then pull it down if not the problem. Eric

yes, at the back of the microwave there are 4 or 6 screws, take them out and then pull the cover follow the cable( the one you connect to the outlet) going to the inside of the microwave inside you will see the fuse change it with the same size, it is a slow burn fuse

Interior paint from inside the microwave is falling off, probably into our food. So far, about a quarter-size area. What can be done, and is GE addressing this post-warranty?

nothing can be done except rub it down with sand paper and have it re powder coated, more expensive than a new microwave....its the steam that has caused it,such as baked potatoes, stews and soups....hope i helped

Did I blow it up????

After washing you need to poke holes in potatoe skins or the steam can cause them to explode. Cook potatoes no longer than 6 to 8 minutes depending on your units power.

Microwave ovens can be very dangerous if damaged, so you will be safer to replace the unit. Better safe than sorry. Service on microwave ovens is not cost effective, and the newer ovens are very reasonable.

FIRE

Manufacturers will note that they warn in their owner manuals to never leave a microwave running unattended, so they won't help you any further, I'm sure.

Mmost modern microwaves have a flame sensor inside that will shut the microwave down completely in case flames get too high.

Then the cooling fan and power will shut off, and the fire will almost certainly be smothered pretty quickly due to a lack of air inside the oven.

Also, the inside is metal, thus the only fuel for the fire would have been the potato, which would not have lasted long.

So as scary and disturbing as this event was, I would say the real danger of a fire outside of the oven was miniscule.

The fire probably occured due to a dry or irregular spot in the skin of the potato. Once it's dry, it will of course burn much easier.

So now to the smell...

You should do a Google search on "odor microwave" or "microwave smell" where you can find tips on boiling water & baking soda, then vinegar and water in the microwave to neutralize the smell.

If your microwave does not work, then it may have blown the flame sensor (thermal fuse) and that would have to be replaced.

Please let us know if we can help further.
