A 12 year old PC, today.! oops.
what does conked out mean, 100% dead screen, ?
dead fan, and dead hdd no sounds from hdd (ear next to it)???
what are you asking, how to test, or guess?
get it serviced is the correct answer.
guessing is your job, we can't guess for you? can we?
testing, basics. 101.
remove the big battery first.
then run on AC pack, only, and what happens.
The pack is $8 on ebay, that is cheapest guess there is, really.
1: screen 100% dead,
2: fan dead.inside and overheats and newer cleaned ever.
3: hdd makes sounds, ear to side, this and above all dead, that means the PC has serious power problem, one that you will not find unless skilled.
do not use the wrong pack , ok. only use the correct AC power pack;
larger wattage is ok, (only)
This old PC has CCFL back lamps.
if those are bad the Screen is dead.
fan blows.
hdd spins heard
and a flashlight pointed to LCD screen snows data.
if that is true CCFL is now dead, as all are this old and used
5 hrs a day.
all are.
CCFL = backlamps.
so will be that 12year old huge battery
and the 12 year old coin cell, but CCFL is DOOMED PC>
Hi, maybe your power adapter, its cable or plug is faulty, maybe some of your friends has the same type of power adapter to test it with your computer. If you have a DC Voltmeter to could check output voltage from your power adapter.
SOURCE: switch from Windows vista to Windows XP
If the laptop came with Windows Vista Home you can't really uninstall it. You will need to wipe out everything on the computer and use a Windows XP disk to load that on your computer.
Equipment needed -
1. Valid Copy of Windows XP
2. USB Floppy Drive w/ Disk
3. Windows XP Drivers
***Also be aware if you do this you will lose any of the programs that came with your computer if you wipe it out. I HIGHLY recommend making your Vista recovery CDs before attempting to install another OS. (You can do this from the Acer manager)
Note you may also need access to a USB Floppy drive and a floppy disk with the SATA drivers for your motherboard on it. ( If it has an Intel processor you can probably get it from intel.com, otherwise you'll have to track down the manufacturer of the motherboard)
I would also download all the Windows XP files from acer ( here ) as it will make you life easier later.
Now you'll need to insert the Windows XP disk and turn on the computer. It may ask you to press a key to boot from CD, go ahead and press a key if it asks this.
It will now start to install windows XP. During the first few seconds there will be a message that says "Press F6 to install 3rd party drivers" --- Go ahead and continue with the install. If you get to a screen that says there is no hard drive installed in the computer you'll need to reboot it and press F6 at this screen. Please have the floppy drive plugged into the computer but no floppy disk in it while the computer is rebooting. After you press F6 it is ok to insert the disk into the drive. It will continue to load for a few minutes and then give you the option to install the drivers you need for the computer to see your SATA hard drive.
After that mess it will ask you where you want to install windows too, and you'll want to have it do a quick format in NTFS. Screens and extra info can be found here.
When windows is done installing you'll want to pop the CD in with the drivers you've downloaded and install everything to get it back into working shape.
This is a fairly long and complicated process. If you have trouble you can pop in your recovery disks, reboot the computer and it will set the computer back to the way it came from the factory.

try downloading a new driver from the acer website. i think it is the bison driver that works for me.
SOURCE: Broken Power Pin
Your model has a power jack that is soldered to the mainboard.
Yes, this is a common problem with a lot of notebooks. It usually happens when someone walks by and trips on the power wire and pulls the notebook off the desk / table and onto the floor.
Unless you're comfortable with taking it apart, and good with a soldering iron, you should take it to a repair shop.
If you ARE comfortable with doing so, the power jack can be purchased from several suppliers on Ebay, for about $12 including shipping. Just do a search for "aspire 3680 jack" and you will see them.
PS: Most shops charge $100-$150 to replace the jack.
SOURCE: Acer Aspire 3680 Complete Restore
http://www.acerpanam.com/us Go to that website and click on "eRecovery Disc Purchase". Acer does not come with recovery discs. It only comes with a recovery partition from which you can make recovery discs. If they discs were not made you'll find the provided website useful. If you're trying to recover from your recovery partition, then continuously hit the F11 key at startup. This F11 option is not always displayed. If this doesn't work then your hard drive is corrupt or damaged and you will need the discs (and potentially a new hard drive).
