Hi,
There are two problems with leaving a TV out in the cold:
1. If the TV was used outside it will be warmer than the air temperature. This causes moisture from the air to condense on the warm/hot surfaces of the TV - including the internal components. Water conducts electricity so if the TV is switched on and there is water (condensation) on the internal components, it's more than likely that something will short and cause serious damage to the TV.
2. Some components inside a TV are very sensitive to sudden dramatic changes in temperature. If a TV is very cold and you switch it on, the sudden increase in temperature of electricity flowing through cold components can damage them.
Sudden dramatic increases or decreases in temperature damage many materials. If you take a glass dish from the freezer and immerse it in hot water, it will probably fracture and break. If you allow the glass to warm up slowly, it doesn't break. This is exactly what happens to components in a TV if they are very cold and you switch the TV on.
When buying a new TV or any electrical appliance, it is always good practice to take it out of the box and allow it to reach room temperature before installing it.
