Linksys WRT54G2 Wireless Router Logo
Anonymous Posted on Dec 06, 2010

I have a LinkSys WRT54G2, Vers 1.0 router with the latest firmware installed and basically default configuration. I usually have 3-4 PCs connected to the router. I frequently loose connection to the internet and have to power it off/on. However, I also utilize a VPN connection through the router to my place of work - this connection will remain functional when the general internet connections fail. Is this just a bad router or is their a possible solution

  • Anonymous Dec 07, 2010

Sorry - but I am not going to pay for a solution until I know that it works.

In checking if you're computer is properly connected to the Linksys Router, you will need to perform four steps:
i. Checking the Physical Connection to the Router
ii. Checking the LEDs
iii. Checking the IP Address of the PC
iv. Pinging the Router
NOTE: To check the computer's connection to the router using Mac, click here. If you are using Windows Vista, click here. For Windows 7 users, learn more here. For Windows 7 users, learn more here.
Checking the Physical Connection to the Router

Make sure that the computer is connected to one of the four Ethernet ports of the router and the modem should be connected to the Internet port. For more instructions, click here.
Checking the LEDs

The Linksys router's LED lights will indicate the status of the connection. After connecting the broadband modem and the computer to the router, make sure that the LED lights are lit up. For more instructions, click here.
Checking the IP Address of the PC

The IP address of the computer is another indication that the computer is properly connected to the router. For instructions, click here.
Pinging the Router

Ping test helps trace the communication between the computer and the router. The computer sends packets to the router and in return the router sends out replies to validate the connection. In this example, our router IP address is "192.168.1.1."

Trying to configure my Linksys WRT120N router, but when I click 'Save Settings' I get an error message (324). What's wrong?

I think you can try upgrading the firmware on your router,

Connect the computer to the router.
Download the latest firmware.
Open the setup page of the router and upgrade the firmware.
After upgrading the firmware, reset the router and reconfigure it manually.

See How to upgrade firmware on Linksys router.

Hi

The Router configuration is not that much difficult, only few thing you have sure,
1) Correct ADSL Connection User name & password,
2) Chose unique ip address in All host.

Follow the mention bellow instruction to configure and connect to Wifi Router,

  • Plug the network cable ( Mine was Blue ) which comes with the Router Box pack to your computer. The other end goes into any of the Router Ethernet Port ( 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 )
  • Now type in 192.168.1.1 in IE or Firefox or any browser. You will prompted for password which is admin. You must be logged into Linksys Router.
  • Now since your ADSL modem is also having the same IP , we will change the IP address for WRT54G2 Router to 192.168.5.1
  • Under Setup >Basic Setup look for Network Setup and Change Router IP. Change to 192.168.5.1 and Save changes.
  • Since the IP has changed you will need to close the Browser.

I have a modem cable connection with time Warner cable but router isn't connecting to modem what can I do

Hello,
I install Linksys routers all the time. Usually the first thing I do, is update the routers firmware. Many times I find that if the Linksys router doesn't automatically get a connection from DHCP, updating the firmware usually solves it.

To update the firmware:
Connect just to the cable box so you have an active internet connection.
1. Go to: http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/wireless/lbc/WRT54G2/download
2. Select your router version (can be found on the sticker near the model number) and download the latest firmware to a spot you will remember.
3. Now connect the router to your cable modem and computer.
4. Access your routers configuration page (If you don't know the address try: http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1).
5. Log-in - if you haven't changed the username/password the default should be a blank username with the password "admin".
6. Click "Administration"
7. Click "Firmware Upgrade"
8. Click "Browse" and choose the firmware file you downloaded in step 2.
10. Click Upgrade. Be patient and let it do its thing.

See if you connect after that. If not, let me know and I will walk you through the next steps.

But this page is way more helpful

From a browser enter 192.168.1.1
This should give you the web interface to your router.
Your interface should look something like this:
http://ui.linksys.com/files/WRT54G2/1.5.00/

To login leave user id blank and use 'admin' as a password (default)

Note that this model has at least 3 different variants and particulars will vary:

Wont allow me to connect 2 additional computers and need pin name or number

Two methods to solve your problem:
Method 1:
(1) Using your currently connected and working computers, access the wireless router security page at 192.168.1.1 (page 8 of 44 from the WRT54G2 manual), default password "admin" (page 7 of 44 from the WRT54G2 manual)
PDF file of the Linksys/Cisco Wireless-G Broadband Router User Guide:
http://belkashop.com.ua/products_files/WRT54G2_V10_EN.pdf
You'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view/print this file - free from www.adobe.com
(2) get the WEP or WPA password, and enter it into the wireless LAN (WLAN) settings on your 2 additional computers.

Method 2:
Alternatively, access the WEP or WPA key on one of your working PC, by
(1) make sure the printer is working, powered up and online.
(2) invoke "Network Setup Wizard"
(3) wind thru various steps (click-ing NEXT), then select "Print Network Settings"

WRT54G2 wired desktop fine, can't connect to wireless.

Hi Seth6025,

Try without using Wireless Encryption (password).

Try changing channels; default is 6; try 1 or 11.
Change your SSID: personalize it
SSID broadcast: Enable

Check the advanced wireless settings and make sure MAC filtering - DISABLED.

Reset the Linksys router by pressing RESET for 30 seconds should everything fails and re-configure. Firmware is another consideration BUT this is just a new release.
