Stuck at IBM Thinkpad Splash Screen

Hi,

I have an old T20 that has been working fine - I took it on a trip a few weeks back where it worked great. I tried booting it today and it simply is stuck on the IBM Thinkpad splashscreen. If you press F1 (bios) or F12 (boot), it will say it is entering those modes, but just hangs as well.

I've tried:

- reseating memory, harddrive and battery
- swapping this laptop's HD to a different T20 and that T20 will boot so I'm fairly sure it is not the local HD
- booting with battery only and with battery removed
- tried hitting F8 during boot (read this somewhere else)

Can any provide any troubleshooting hints? Thanks.

Sound like a memory chip has failed. Try removing the memory, I believe these have on board, but not sure. If it doesn't have on board, you will need at least one chip in. If the problem is still there, try removing the CD drive, occasionally they can cause a no start. If it's not the memory or the CD drive, then try a bios flash. You will need to create a bootable disc from IBM's support site using a different machine (obviously).
If the bios flash doesn't fix it, them the problem will lie with the motherboard.

Hi, During the boot at the THINKPAD SCREEN press the Thinkvantage key ( Blue button ) it will launch rescue and recovery and allow you to reboot factory. This only works if you did not corrupted/deleted the rescue and recovery hidden partition on the HDD. Otherwise you will need the rescue and recovery CD to proceed. IBM/Lenovo support should be able to provide you the CD. Might be a defective hdd aswell, in this case to make sure you can run a DFT test, www.google.com -> Look up for " Test DFT " ( Drive fitness tool from hitachi, will make an hardware diag if hdd failure - error code 0x00 = everything fine, other code = Issue - You can look up for accurate code explanation on hitachi website ) thanks and have a nice day J-

Yes, it's possible, but unless you are a qualified laptop technician, I recommend that you take both computers to a qualified technician, to get the job done properly and safely and correctly.

Thinkpad T20 won't power up

Hi,
I know it sounds wierd, but take out the memory, and install 1 piece from one of the working machines. Put the cover back on, but as you boot, put pressure on the cover, as if to push the memory into the motherboard.
These have this happen alot.
Good luck

IBM Thinkpad T20 - Model Type 264784U

I would say the hard drive is failing. But need to run a diagnostic on it to be sure.

If you would like to know where to get the ibm / hitachi hard drive diagostic let me know. It's free for download and you can get a bootable ISO image to burn onto cd. Allowing you to boot from cd in order to test the drive.

As far as replacing, you should be good with a 60gb or 80gb. Did it orginally have a 20gb in it? I would say for most people, 60-80 is way more than enough. Unless you have a ton of music or pictures.
