Oil inside the water collection res

This was to have been the third season for my Whirlpool AD25BBK Dehumidifier, and the fan started when things began getting damp in my basement as is normal this time of year. Well, it never seemed to fill up with water as it has previously. It had collected some fluid and I went to my laundry sink with the water reservoir to dump it in. What my unit collected, was heavy weight oil. What the Devil, where did it come from and what happen to this thing? Am I SOL, or what ???

So politely put, the unit is toast ... The next one I will spring for an extended Warranty. Consumer Reports rates the Kenmore 54701 rather highly so I guess I will check it out. Thank you for confirming my worst fears Tresilla. So much for banking that stimulus check ...

The compressor runs in oil. suspect you have a quite bad leak and loss all the gas - hence no water collection and the compressor oil is being pumped out thro the leak

"
It may be that the humidity level or temperature in the room where your dehumidifier is located is too low.

When the outdoor temperature is below 50 F, the indoor air will be dry even when the air inside is warm, therefore when it's cold outside the dehumidifier may collect little or no water.

Air conditioners will also remove moisture from the room, even if it's hot and humid outside, resulting in little or no moisture collecting in the dehumidifier bucket.

Some dehumidifiers have a deicer which turns off the compressor but keeps the fan running. When the compressor is off, moisture is not removed from the air. The deicer turns off the compressor when the room temperature is cold.

Some dehumidifiers do not have a deicer. If the room temperature is low enough, ice may form on the evaporator coil. The ice prevents the dehumidifier from removing and collecting water. If ice forms on coils, unplug dehumidifier until ice melts and room temperature rises."

It is not producing water, it runs but no water is collecting in pan.

Hello,

First, make sure the humidistat isn't set too high by adjusting it to the lowest humidity setting and running it again.

Next, test the dehumidifier by placing it in a closed bathroom with a hot shower running. If you don't see water collecting in the unit after several minutes, turn the unit off and clean all dehumidifier filters and coils. If, after adjusting the settings and cleaning the unit, you still don't see water collecting, you may have a refrigeration issue.

This situation will have to be addressed by a qualified technician.

Take care.

Fan runs ,coils are room temp. should they be hot or cold , no water is collecting in bottom

A dehumidifier is basically an air conditioner, so some coils should feel hot, the others should feel cold.

If no water is collecting, then the unit's compressor is not starting. Typically you have four possible failures causing this: the switch/wiring for the compressor has an open circuit, the motor-start capacitor for the compressor has failed, the compressor itself has failed, or all the refrigerant has leaked out.

If there is evidence that it is 'trying to start', but then clicking repeatedly, this can be a symptom that the refrigerant has leaked out, as some devices have a pressure switch to prevent compressor damage.

Also, a failed start-capacitor can also cause the click-click noise if the device has a current limiter switch on the compressor.

So the short answer is, it's broken :)
