I have a Nikon D40 and Picture Project software. After dozens of hours editing and weeding through my photos (all were in individually named folders, about a dozen since my Dec. purchase), I thought I would delete the duplicate (or so I thought) folder called All Transfers and that deleted everything -- all of my individually named folders with all my editing ,e tc. Please get all of my pictures back!!!

There's a couple things to try so dont panic... yet.
first I need to know if you used the software everytime you connected your camera to the computer or did you save them on the computer and then use the software to organize them. From the sounds of it. You used the software from the getgo.
Did you ever format your memory card since the downloads or did you just delete the photos?
Let me know about those and I will try to duplicate the situation on my computer to see where to go from here.

Let me know,
Caleb

How to make date show on photo with nikon d40

The date and time (and a lot more) are stored with every picture in its EXIF metadata. Any photo viewing/editing program should be able to display this data. To print this data, please consult the documentation for whatever program you're using to print your pictures. Depending on the program and printer you may print the date on the image, in the margins, or on the back.

Monitor screen can not appear photos before shooting

That's the way the D40 works. The monitor is for menus and picture review, not to show images before shooting. Nikon introduced the LiveView capablitily with the D3 and the D300, introduced after the D40. The D40 works as SLRs have worked for half a century, giving you the image through the viewfinder.

I have a Nikon D40 camera and got a new computer. I am having problems because I don't have the disk for the Picture Project anymore! Help! This download didn't work that was posted. Thanks.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive. Or you can use any photo cataloging program, such as Nikon Transfer.

Nikon Picture Project has been retired and replaced with Nikon Transfer and Nikon ViewNX. You can get the current versions of all (free) Nikon software from

You CAN!!! shoot in b/w with a d40, the only thing is you can't shoot in auto mode it has to be manual , aperture priority, or shutter prioirity. Go into menu - shooting mode - optimize image. you'll find it in there.
