VPL-HS20 shuts down in the middle of a movie

I get no message on the screen. For some unknown reason the projector will just shut off in the middle of a movie. I can hear the fan working when the projector is running. Filter was replaced recently. I get no clue from the troubleshooting seciton of the manual, and there is no mention of an automatic shutdown circuit. I am guessing that this might be some sort of thermal shutdown, but the projector does not feel overheated when it turns off. What else could be causing this?

Same problem here. I have recently changed the setting for the lamp to low and noticed that the problem seemed to go away. That is until I watch something in HD. If someone figures this out it would be greatly appreciated if they could post the solution.

I just changed my bulb and the projector shuts down as well. The last bulb lasted me two years with no problems. If the problem persist I will check and see if the two wires to the bulb needs tightening? That may be the problem. If it works I'll let everyone know. I never had any problem with it till now.

My VPL-HS20 has worked flawlessly since I bought it new years ago. Tonight, it shut completely off in the middle of a blue-ray movie, too, as others have described; no fans, nothing, no warning messages first, just an abrupt complete lack of power. Unplugging the unit, waiting a few minutes, then pressing the power button brought it back to life long enough to finish the movie, but then it happened again. The original bulb is in it, and I'm on the second air filter. Both may be due for changing, but as I said, there have been no error messages and the picture still looks great. The fans always run during a "cooling down" period when powering off.. it's really wierd to have the whole thing shut down completely w/ no warning. Ideas?

There is a heat sensor cutting down the power. The sensor is located on the upper side between lamp and fan and is monitoring the air temperatur. I don't know what is causing the sensor to switch - excessive heat or simply age or ... . Anyway un screwed this sensor and my problem disappeared.
Possibly a stronger fan would solve the problem too.

VPL-HS50 shuts down after few seconds

It must be a problem with electric connection. you should check whether it is OK or not. If it is okay, read instruction manual.

My Sony VPLHS-20 has original bulb, now just shut off 50 mins into the SuperBowl. No fault light, in fact, no lights showing on the display at all. Bulb has around 1800 hours. I waited 10 minute, red...

Pretty sure it the bulb as most are rated at 2000 hours; but also check for full air flow - clean filters etc. Bulbs can run hotter as they age, so air flow is more important, because there is an inside heat sensor that will shut the machine down.

I have purchased 2 sony ex3 lcd projectors(one for spares, and one that needed a new lamp)I also have a new lamp!!But it wont work on either machines. All i get is flashing on/off light, then lamp cover...

you may have to reset the lamp hour meter to get it to work, put the projector on stanby and press the remote buttons, reset - back - forward - reset, (this is the code for a vpl hs20 projector it may be slighty different for your model)

I'm trying to connect a Sony Projector to a Dell Laptop. I can't get a picture on the screen

There are a bunch of steps I could walk you through to detect the projector and then set the correct resolution and color depth. But it will be easier to have you just attach the projector and then restart the laptop so that the system will attempt to re-detect the second display automatically.

Then just right click the desktop and select properties. Go under display properties, settings, and enable the second screen (2) as either a cloned or extended display.

Sony vpl-hs20 cineza projector- reset lamp counter

These instructions are for a Sony Cineza VPL HS3, but may be the same for the HS3.
1st thing to check - is the cover properly/completely closed - this can stop the projector from working.
Connect the power and set the projector to standby mode.
Press these buttons on the remote control in this order, for less than 5 seconds each.
Reset - Left Arrow - Right Arrow - Enter

This is required, to reset the lamp timer.

Also, something I found interesting from the internet - lamp life isn't when the bulb dies, but when a bulb has lost 10% of its brightness - so you might well be able to reset the timer and get much more use from the bulb - the image just wont be as bright.

VPL-HS20 issues...who's got the right answers!

I know this post is 3yrs old, but wanted to add a couple things. I have the VPL-HS20, you can take the filter out and blow it out with air can duster every so often. I bought a new one and they are over $30.00.. Also buy the correct bulb LMP-H180 3000hrs if you replace it. You can clean the front lens protector, Remove slide tab, hold top and bottom of lens cover assembly and give a firm 1/4 twist clockwise, then pull out. You can clean it with glass cleaner cloth.
