I wonder if your 'Front Light' seems any dimmer than what it was?
It can be your aging power supply is not providing the full voltage your laptop needs?... Let's say your laptop needs 19.5 Volts (and it DOES), but your supply can only provide 16 or lower volts? You may see results like you are getting now...
New supplies are not that expensive (about $14 inc US shipping) and rather spending a lot for diagnostics and waiting a week or so, a new fresh supply MAY be all you need!
OK... I just found a NEW supply for $8.52 on eBay for your system and he's a US Shipper too. It's worth a try!

SOURCE: Sony VAIO VGN-FE770G only runs on AC power, battery not working
This looks like the system is not able to sustain itself on the battery power. I have a doubt here. Is it a new or an old laptop. Either Case we have to suspect the battery charging and battery condition. One another reason could be that the battery contact is not good. But this could be of the least chance as the manufacturing of such devices would be perfect in all standards. Lets check the battery power first.
A sony Vaio never operates if the battery is not detected or the battery is not charging, while the system is up and running, you can see a small picture of the battery in the system tray which is at the right bottom corner of the screen. Run your mouse over the same and you will find a tooltiptext message and you can see if the battery is charging or not. If not, your hardware has a problem. If its charging but the battery charge is not increasing, then you have a battery problem. If its a battery problem and that the system is under warranty, you can well get a replacement for free. Hope this resolves the issue. Good Luck.

The Battery driver is beeing controlled by the Notebook control and Utility. What you can try to do is to reinstall it from the link below
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNNR120ES&upd_id=3262&os_id=28
If after reinstalling the Notebook control and utility and still the battery wont be detected, do the steps below
test if the battery will be detected.
If still none, then it needs battery replacement
