Hi.

On order to make an external hard drive readable from a dvd player you need to reformat the hard drive to fat32 format. Most DVD players are only able to read drives formatted in the FAT32 system,

To format the ext hard drive to Fat32 you will need to connect it to your computer first to carry out the formatting.

1) Click "Start" then "Run"

2) Type "CMD" into the text box, then press "Enter."

3) Type "Format /FS:FAT32 X:" into the command prompt, replacing the letter "X" with the actual drive letter of your USB hard drive. If you do not know the drive letter of your hard drive, open "My Computer" and look under "Devices with removable storage." BE SURE YOU HAVE SELECTED THE CORRECT DRIVE LETTER TO FORMAT. Then press "Enter".

4) Press "Y" when you have identified the correct drive and you are ready to format the hard drive. All data present on the drive will be erased once it has been formatted. The drive will now be formatted to FAT 32

5) Load the films onto the USB hard drive. Be aware FAT32 file system cannot support files larger than four gigabytes.

6) Connect the ext hard drive to your DVD player via usb and select "USB Device" or it may be labelled as external device. Your DVD player should recognise the device and play the films.

Thanks for using FixYa. Please do leave a vote for the solution.

No, the external hard drive isn't compatible to your Samsung: that USB connector has been designed to accept only USB memory sticks that are 16 GB or less. There is nothing that can be done to make it accept an 1.5 TB hard disk.

Yes, it will work on a PS3, just make sure it's formatted in FAT32

The usb on the unit is too basic to run an external hard drive and currently they don't have an upgrade to make it work.

  • Anonymous Dec 01, 2010

Then you just need to partition the hard drive to smaller portions

  • Anonymous Dec 01, 2010

Yes but it will more than likely still need to be partitioned to small portions

Hi, I have a Samsung DVD Player H1080 R. Nice player with sleek design. When I try to connect my Seagate Go Flex USB 2.0 Plug & Play (1 TB), it doesnt play. There is data in the external hard disk,...

Good day!

These are the 2 possible causes and solution on that problem:
  • The format of the file on U.S.B device is not compatible to the format requirements of the DVD player. For example your DVD player required A.V.I or MPG/M-PEG for the video while the file format of your U.S.B is F.L.V and when you try to insert it to the U.S.B port the file doesn't read. You have to do is convert the file that store on your U.S.B device depends on the format requirement of your DVD.Use a total video converter to convert the file on your U.S.B to the format you need to play on the DVD player.

  • Or the problem could be the U.S.B itself, because the U.S.B host on this product does not supported all U.S.B device. Please try to use other mass media device such as memory card or mp3 players.
I hope this solution will be helpful.Thank you.

Seagate Barracuda external hardrive - damage to usb connector on

Assuming the drive itself is still ok (it sounds like it would be), then yes, you can put the drive into another case or directly into the motherboard if you know how to do that.

WD pluged to a Seagate HD Media Player= no data??!!

whell th eproblem is, when u pluged it in to the seagate...... a variation of the first sector happend, or something like that, thats y you cannot access it frome vista, and propably frome xp 2, what u can do is , using special programes for fixing boot sectors **** they are for experienced users in that domain (ex of product, winpe mini cd....), or u can download any linux live cd, its totally free (google for it), i recomand puppy if you are not familior with linux, when u download the iso and burn it, plug your external drive and boot the cd, when loaded, mount the extrenal drive and the internal one (if u have one), you will see the data, copy them , and then reboot with windows and format the external drive...then recopy the files.

I am trying to view pictures and videos as well as music form my seagate 250gb expansion portable hard drive, through my dvd player via usb port. it reads "no data" is there anything that i can do to...

Most probably your harddrive is formatted using NTFS file system, while your DVD player only understands FAT32 filesystem.
Check the format of your drive by hooking it up to a computer and opening it's properties. And check your DVD player's specifications regarding USB support in it's manual or online, on manufacturer's website support section.
If indeed the filesystem type is the problem, you can do a couple of things:
1) Purchase a Flash pendrive of suitable capacity (these are FAT32 usually) and use it for viewing pictures & videos on your DVD player,
2) Move everything temporarily from your external hard disk to your computer's disk and re-format your external drive using FAT32 filesystem. Note, that FAT32 has some disadvantages, like a 2GB file size limit. And also remember, that formatting the drive wipes everything from it, so be sure to copy all stuff to your computer's internal drive first!
3) Check the possibility of connecting your PC to the TV directly and forget about the DVD player for viewing pictures and videos.

Seagate external desktop drive

There seems to be an incompatability. Some of those devices can only read up to a certain file size, like my friend has a digital photoframe that can only recognise up to 2GB. Also try not putting the files in folders and just having them all in the root directory
