That's the way the D40 works. The monitor is for menus and picture review, not to show images before shooting. Nikon introduced the LiveView capablitily with the D3 and the D300, introduced after the D40. The D40 works as SLRs have worked for half a century, giving you the image through the viewfinder.

No picture on LCD monitor when camera (rebel xt) is turned on

I am not sure what is the problem. You say no"picture"..is the screen totally black? Even when you try to preview photos in your camera memory? If so there is a problem with the hardware, LCD screen battery, or some other part.

If you mean you only see numbers and photo setting information on the LCD, that is normal for this Rebel models. The picture only appears in the viewfinder. It does not have a "live view' function to switch the image from the viewfinder to the LCD while you are shooting, as later model have. I have such a model and it is very disappointing.

In my View sonic CRT monitor E71f 17",there is a curve appearing on the upper side of the screen and there is some space between the display and the screen, please help. thanks

It's time to responsibly recycle your old CRT monitor, and spend about $100 to buy a new 17" or 19" LCD screen, rather than spending any money at a qualified TV/video technician, trying to trouble-shoot the problem.

I have a new Canon T1i . I cannot figure out how to use the LCD screen to take a picture, like I would on a normal digital camera. I can preview w/ the LCD and see Menu options, but am unable to look at...

Set the shooting mode to a Creative Zone mode. Press the LiveView button (northwest of the round multiselector). The LiveView image will appear on the monitor.

For full details, see the "Live View Shooting" chapter in the manual.

Be careful shooting this way. Not only will the LCD consume more battery power this way, but holding the camera at arm's length will produce more camera motion than bracing it against your face.
