First what OS are you using? Do you have the full software installed, the basic HP driver or the OS-based driver? The first time you scan, you will need to start the scan from the computer. Put your document face down on the scanner glass or face up if you have an automatic document feeder. Launch the HP Solution Center (in Windows), and then click Scan Photo or Scan Document. If you need to adjust the settings, cancel the scan and click Settings. Then click Scan Settings.
If you have the full software installed, you can set up the software to "listen" for the button presses and launch the software to scan. Use the first scan to give you your defaults to enter into the Button settings. In the HP Solution Center, click Settings and then Scan Settings. Then click Button Settings and then the Front Panel Buttons tab.
If you have the OS-based driver installed or the basic HP driver, with Windows 7, you can use Windows Fax and Scan.
