You almost certainly do not need it. If your map list is not showing or if it locked try this: Firstly, please connect your device to a computer. You will find a folder in the device called 'Garmin'. In this folder will be multiple files that start with the phrase 'gmap'. Please delete the files starting with 'gmap'. Once you have done this, please re-load the courses on your device using the Garmin CourseView updater which can be found here: http://software.garmin.com/en-GB/courseview_updater.html
All gps units need a clear view of the sky to collect enough data for a proper "fix". The less obstructions there are, the faster & more accurate the fix will be.
Initially, the first fix may take up to 20 minutes. Long acquisition times typically occur when the unit is powered up after being moved hundreds or miles or more since its last fix. This would be the case from manufacturing location in China where it was shut off to where ever you are now when you turned it on.
Acquisition times after this should be significantly less (10 - 60 seconds)
If the back button does not work, power off the Approach.
Connect the Approach to your computer and try running the Garmin WebUpdater to load or reload the latest version of software. This will resolve most issues.
Power it back on and try doing a screen calibration by pressing the wrench in the bottom right corner and arrow down and press Calibrate Screen. Press on the dots using a stylus or the round part on the back of a plastic pen.

There's information on how to unlock maps on Garmin nuvi satnavs at http://www.fixya.com/support/r6197735-no_detailed_maps_found_support_routing. I don't know if the approach G5 would unlock in the same way but there's a good chance it would since they're both made by garmin. All I can say is have a look at the information on the link, check if the information you need is available on myGarmin and if the same files are on your GPS. If all these are the same it should work.
This sounds like a firmware issue try downloading Garmins WebUpdater Software and giving the unit a firmware update. If your are unable to connect the GPS to the PC you will have to send it in for warranty or repair. Here is a link to the Garmin Software you will require for the updates.
You could try pressing on the upper left hand of the screen when you turn it on and do a full reset. You lose any data that you had saved but it would go back to a fresh install. You might want to see if you could download the firmware and software into it again. I think it allows you to do that with a warning about losing data. Oh if you do either take it outside and turn it on for a few moments so that it can acquire the satellites. I did not realize this so I thought I had a problem and turned it off. When I restarted I had lots of problems.
