I have had my camera for not even a year and it recently started having this problem. Whenever I take a picture, the object will look fine in the display, but when I take the picture it gets horizontal lines across the picture. It is much worse if there is any natural light coming into the picture. I have tried adjusting the flash, the white balance, but the pictures are still coming out this way. Also, if there is a good amount of natural light, you can't see the object you at all, it looks overexposed every time.

If I understand you correctly, you're saying that the LCD display shows a normal picture when you are composing your shot, but that when you actually snap the shutter to record the shot, the resulting image has nasty lines across it?

That would indicate that the lens is fine, but that the image sensor itself or associated electronics have gone bad. If this is out of warranty, then you're likely out of luck.

Pretty much the lines appear just if there is natural light coming into the photo. For example, if I am inside not near any windows, the picture will turn out pretty much normal. But then if I am outside, or inside near a window, that's when the lines and look of overexposure appear. This is regardless of the flash being on or off.

I'm not entirely certain about your description of the problem. However, if everything looks fine on your camera monitor before the picture is taken, then you know the lens and mechanism is okay. That leaves either the processing of the camera, determined in part by your your menu selections, or the sensor and electronics. If you have your menu selections set to auto white balance, auto exposure, auto ISO and any other auto features--the camera should be able to create a balanced image outdoors. It may have ugly color, but it should be exposed basically correctly and not have any weird lines or blown out areas of the image. If it does, your sensor or associated electronics are likely damaged.

Canon S2 is washed out pictures

Just when I thought my camera was fixed I started experiencing the same problem with my S2 IS. Don't know if it is any help to finding the solution but the camera works fine outdoors when used in video mode.

Camera wont turn on

there is a recall on this model to replace the part that sees the objects and send it to the LCD screen. look it up on the sony web site its a free fix until September! (if that's whats wrong, and it most likely is). I sent mine in and they fixed it quick and free, even the shipping!

Lines on video

I've found out that if the little internal battery that holds the date and time is run down, then the camera can't focus on moving things well. I left mine plugged in all weekend, now can record action. Some can be replaced - like a big watch battery.

"Shake" warning symbol won't leave screen.

That shake warning will appear whenever the camera is in a low-light situation where the shutter speed is low and the images may blur. If it's coming on even in bright light, maybe you set the shutter speed to a fixed low setting? Either way, you may be able to shut off the warning in the settings of the camera.

Unable to focus camera.

The common cause of lines across the picture is a stuck shutter. This will cause over exposed pictures, out of focus, with lines across them. If the problem is infact a stuck shutter it will require full disassembly to fix, which will be somewhere between $100 and $200 to fix depending on where you send it. An image sensor failure, or focus motor failure can also cause simular problems - but they also cost simular amounts to fix. David Millier Advance Camera Repair
