Have you considered NOT connecting the camera to the computer?
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive. Or you can use any photo cataloging program.
Hi kbailey. Turn on the camera and go to the menu. find the reset function. Reset the camera. This means you are returning it to all of the settings it was at when it was brand new out of the box. Joe

Please read what I have tried before answering my question. The first answer I received suggested I try everything I had already tried and put in my question.
I have been using my Canon G11 with no problems for over a year.
This morning I went to download photos and got "Communications error"
I HAVE ALREADY TRIED:
Checked the cord to make sure it is good (it is).
Tried new cord.
Turned camera on and off.
Took out and replaced memory card
Charged Battery.
Took out and replaced battery.
Rebooted computer.
Tried different camera (Canon Powershoot SD750) which downloaded fine.
Please do not recommend I do the above as I have already done all of those things.
Thank you.
I did that, and still getting "communications error".
Thank you for your response, however I did discover the answer to my problem on my own. I will share it with you in case it comes up again. The most common reasons that Canon cameras get the "Communication error" message is that the memory card has at least 1000 images on it. For some reason when this occurs it will no longer communicate with the computer.
The fix was to simply delete enough images to where I could download the new ones, and then reformat the memory card.
Thank you for your comments. However, I finally discovered the answer to the problem on my own, which I will share with you in case it comes up again. The most common reason a Canon camera gets the "communication error" message is that there are more than 1000 images on the memory card. In this case, it will no longer communicate with the computer. To solve the issue I simply erased enough images to be able to download my new ones, then reformatted the memory card.
