I have a student who just got a new calculator (TI-84). when you press the exponent button (x2) or the carrot button the numbers following the exponent stay superscripted. How do I adjust it so she can use the calculator for graphing etc.

There's nothing wrong, the calculator just has the newest version of the operating system. To tell the calculator you're finished entering the exponent, simply press the right-arrow. If you don't want the new MathPrint mode, press MODE, press up-arrow to get to the second page, keep pressing up-arrow to get to the top line, highlight CLASSIC, press ENTER, then press 2ND [QUIT]. Now the calculator will display as the older operating system did.

The new MathPrint mode shows exponents, roots, fractions, and other things more like they appear in textbooks.

Depending on your version of the TI-30, you will either find a button with a y to the exponent of x or a button that is the carot (^) sign. you would type (1.0075)^(-240), where ^ is the appropriate button (y^x or just ^).

He apparently has the new operating system working in MathPrint mode. Try pressing 2 ^ 3 right-arrow * 8 ^ 2 ENTER.

The right-arrow terminates the exponent and continues with the remainder of the expression.
