I know this sounds like an insult, but check FIRST to be sure you have the bobbin inserted in the bobbin case correectly. If it IS in the case right, then check your upper tension. It generally needs to be at 3. Check also to be sure the top thread is between the tension disks. If it isn't, you won't have the right tension to connect the threads. You bobbin also needs to be wound tightly. A loose wind will cause problems with the bobbin thread. If none of these work, the bobbin tension might need to be adjusted by a professional.
