The information > HP Pavilion dv4000 merely means it is a Pavilion Notebook PC, and one of the dv4000 series of Notebook PC's.

The actual Product Number is on the bottom of the laptop, (Notebook), in a white Service Tag.
P/N stands for Product Number.
Not being a wise guy, just wanted you to have this information for the future.

Fortunately all of the HP Pavilion dv4000 series of Notebook PC's use the same type of Ram Memory modules, (sticks), and the same speed.

They uses DDR Sdram at 333MegaHertz. (333MHz)
Also known as PC2700

The Maximum TOTAL Amount is 2GB.
There are two ram memory slots. EACH slot has a maximum amount of 1GB.

1) Example using an HP Pavilion dv4005us Notebook PC,

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00300139&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=461723

2) Information from Crucial.com to confer,

http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=Pavilion%20dv4000%20Series

A Ram Memory module for a laptop differs from a desktop.
It isn't as long, and the number of contact pins on the bottom are of a different number.

It is SO-DIMM.
Has 200 gold plated contact pins on the bottom. 100 on each side.

The Ram Memory module is about 3 inches long, whereas in comparison a ram memory module for a desktop computer that is DDR Sdram is around 5 and 1/4 inches long.

Be sure it is laptop ram memory you are buying.

This is the download page for the Service Manual.
With it you can see how to remove, and install ram memory in your computer.
You can also completely disassemble your laptop, if you have to, or replace any component in it,

On this page click on the blue >
HP Pavilion dv4000 Notebook PC and Compaq Presario V4000 Notebook PC - Maintenance and Service Guide

After you click it may take up to 30 seconds to see the first page. The file is downloading in the background.
It may also take additional time to download after you see the first page.

[ Took 2 seconds to see the first page, and an additional 58 seconds to fully download just now, using a medium speed DSL connection ]

If you are not familiar with PDF files.

You can use the Bookmarks menu to the left.
1) Click on the + sign next to > Removal and Replacement Procedures
2) Scroll down a little click right on > 5.7 Memory Module

You can use the blue Down Arrow at the top, and click down to Page 119

You can use the page number box at the top to the right of the blue Down Arrow.
1) Put your mouse cursor in the page number box
2) Left-click once
3) Type 119
4) Press the Enter key

Is there any way to install more than 2 gig memory?

If the manufacturer stated this maximum, there is no way around it. Get an SSD for a large speed improvement. As for the DDR3 vs DDR2, this is also set in stone. Sorry!

I wanted to get my acer aspire T180-UA381B upgraded, and I know very little about computers, how much and what kind of ram should i put in to make it run fast

Based on your memory specs below the maximum RAM that you can install in your computer is 1GB
DDR2 SDRAM and you can get 1GB RAM for like $15 -$ 20. 1 GB DDR2 SDRAM is what you need to buy.

Your Memory Specs:
Installed Cache Memory: 256.0 KB
[close] Installed RAM: 512.0 MB RAM, or Random Access Memory, is the place in a computerwhere the operating system, application programs and data in current use arekept so that they can be quickly reached by the computer's processor. Theamount of RAM you have affects how quickly you will experience your computerworking.

I need to know what RAM I should use in my Compaq Presario 5000 desktop computer

You have three Ram Memory slots.

EACH ram memory slot's maximum amount is 256MB
Total Maximum Amount for the computer is 768MB.

Uses SDR Sdram ram memory.

[Single Data Rate Sdram. Commonly just referred to as Sdram.

That is a misnomer.
All ram memory from SDR to DDR3 IS Sdram.

Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory.

SDR Sdram = Single Data Rate Sdram
DDR Sdram = Double Data Rate Sdram
DDR2 Sdram = Double Data Rate 2 Sdram
DDR3 Sdram = Double Data Rate 3 Sdram

Just thought i would share ]

Uses SDR Sdram that operates at a frequency rate of 133MegaHertz. (133MHz)
Also known as PC133.

Make sure it is,

A) Non-Buffered
B) Non-ECC
C) Low density
D) CAS Latency of 3 (CL3)
E) Uses 3.3 Volts

Here's an example,

Can i use DDR2 RAM instead of DDR1

YES, if your motherboard accepts DDR Sdram, and DDR2 Sdram ram memory. If your motherboard has both types of ram memory slots.

BUT, you can ONLY use DDR Sdram, OR, DDR2 Sdram.

You Cannot use both types of ram memory in the motherboard, at the same time.
(BIOS will only recognize one type at a time)

NO, if your motherboard does not have ram slots for both DDR Sdram, and DDR2 Sdram ram memory.

Double Data Rate Sdram ram memory modules, have 184 gold plated contact pins on the bottom.
92 on Each side,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Generic_DDR_Memory_%28Xytram%29.jpg

(You can click on the above photo to enlarge)

DDR2 Sdram ram memory modules have 240 contact pins.
120 on Each side.

Can i upgrade my ram to ddr3 if so what would you recomend .cheers

Thank you for the clarification sir.
NO, the Fujitsu Scalio 600 Media Center uses the Gigabyte GA-8ISXT-FS motherboard, and it only supports DDR Sdram.

This is a PDF Motherboard Manual for the GA-8ISXT-FS mobo, from Fujitsu Support,

http://uk.ts.fujitsu.com/rl/servicesupport/techsupport/Boards/Motherboards/GigaByte/ga-8isxt/Man_8isxt-fs_uk.pdf

This is the support page for the Fujitsu Scalio 600 Media Center,
from Fujitsu Support,

http://uk.ts.fujitsu.com/rl/servicesupport/techsupport/consumer/MediaCenter/Scaleo%20600/Scaleo%20600.htm

Uses either DDR Sdram at 333MegaHertz, or 400MHz.
(PC2700 and PC3200 respectively)

DDR Sdram has 184 gold plated contact pins on the bottom.
DDR2 Sdram has 240 gold plated contact pins on the bottom.
DDR3 Sdram has the same amount of contact pins as DDR2.

The voltage and signal contact pins are in a different place, from DDR2 to DDR3.
This is why the locating notch on the bottom of the ram stick, is in a different place, comparing DDR2 to DDR3.

So you can see, DDR3 not fit in a DDR2 slot, because the locating lug in the bottom of the ram slot, and the locating notch in the bottom of the ram stick. Keeps people from trying to put DDR3 in a DDR2 slot, and vice-versa.

You can also see why a 240 pin ram stick, will not fit in a 184 pin ram slot.

Bumping up from DDR to DDR2 does make a difference in my book. (Requires using a motherboard that supports DDR2 however, so you would need a different motherboard)

Going from DDR2 to DDR3? Not so much IMHO. The frequency rate is higher, but there is a trade off with slower ram timings.

Sorry if I have been too 'Windy', but I thought I would give you more information, than just,
'No, won't work', or No won't work because your motherboard uses DDR Sdram'.

Upgrade Ram - what do I buy?

This is what the spec says. - DDR2 667 MHz SDRAM, 2 x SODIMM socket for expansion up to 2GB SDRAM

If your computer currently have 1GB of RAM. Its high possible there is 2 sticks of 512mb in there right now. so you will need to get 2 1GB memory since you will need to take out both of those sticks to put in these 2. There is only 2 slots.

Graphics card upgrade

Not compatable at all.
DDR SDRAM memory uses 184 Pin Dimms
Double-Data-Rate Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory, better known as DDR SDRAM or DDR RAM for short, is a type of very fast computer memory. DDR RAM is based on the same architecture as SDRAM, but utilizes the clock signal differently to transfer twice the data in the same amount of time.

DDR2 SDRAM uses 240 Pin Dimms.
DDR2 SDRAM improves on DDR SDRAM by using differential signaling and lower voltages to support significant performance advantages over DDR SDRAM.

If your question has to do with buying a video card that is going to use DDR2 ram, that would be a faster graphics card. You can also get video cards with DDR3 ram which again is even faster.
Oddly enough in respect to system memory DDR2 is supposed to be faster than DDR yet the DDR memory cost more than the DDR2. Go figure.
Click the link for video cards.
