I have a whistler 1660 radar detector. It worked fine for 2 years, then I noticed when I turned the volume up or down it would "skip" and mute itself until I had to wiggle the volume wheel around. Now, there is no volume at all. To me, I would assume it is a bad volume wheel. Does anyone know how to change it?

The volume control is not a common "off the shelf" part and it may not be found in electronic part stores. Have you tried moving the volume control rapidly high and low? Something this will "clean" the contacts in the control.

I hav3e a Whistler 1765 unit and when I tried to transfer it to a new car it would not calibrate, even after 5 tries. It was "stuck" on 315 degrees. Then the display changed and was stuck on...

There could be few reasons for this.
1. There is strong magnetic field near the radar detector. This could be even car speakers.
2. There is power lines going above the place where you are trying to calibrate.
3. To complete calibration you need to press both the volume control buttons while the vehicle is parked.. The display will show "CAL MODE". Then slowly drive at least 2 complete circles while in calibration mode. Then again press both the volume control buttons for 2 seconds until it beeps and shows " CAL DONE" in the display.

I have a whistler XTR 550 that no longer makes a sound. i tried changing the settings to no avail.

Is the volume turned all the way up? (Sorry had to ask). If so and the unit does not make a sound during the self test then the speaker may be bad. If you had it less than a year then it should be covered under warranty. For more info contact whistler at [email protected] or 800-531-0004

Sound

Holding down the volume button will cycle up and down through the volume settings. Yet I suspect that the internal speaker has finally given up the ghost. This is a pretty old Whistler RD. I would highly recommend upgrading to a modern radar detector which has much better overall performance. One of my favorite current Whistler products for the budget conscious is their Pro78. This model provides very good performance at a reasonable price.

New speaker

if you have an old cordless phone like a uniden or cell phone you can take the speaker out and attach it to your radar detector it works just fine in mine,no problems. you might have to remove the speaker housing if it has one. Justy be real careful not to puncture the speaker as i almost did.
