Is this a two piece agitator? You may just need dogs, they are inside the agitator. Rotate the top of the agitator back and forth, top should engage the bottom portion when turning counter clockwise.

There are 3 plastic dogs that have teeth. They become worn smooth and will not engage the agitator. Change these for about $12 and you will be back in business.

replace the dogs in the top portion of the agaitator, the agaitator top comes off and you will see the four dogs part number is 285707 about 3-5 dollars

The ***** part of the agitator is supposed to ratchet in the clockwise direction. this is normal. If you can spin it in either direction (turned off) then you need a set of agitator dogs.
