Remove the battery, press power button to drain power, put battery back on and turn the laptop on again. This usually clear is, but if it doesn't let me know and I will follow up.

No Display, so does it seem like the computer booted up and is running except that the Display is black? Do you hear fans running, disk drive spinning, blinking lights or beeps?
I'm going to assume that in your case since you mentioned a red light that it is not booting up all the way. Therefore your problem is probably with the memory, the video card or some other motherboard issue.
Remove the Power Cord, Remove the Battery, Remove the cover that houses the memory on the bottom of the laptop then remove one of thememory chips. Set the chip aside then try rebooting the computer. If it boots, then you know the memory chip you set aside is bad so mark an x onit with an ink pen. If it fails to boot then move the chip to the nextmemory slot and try rebooting. If it fails take the chip out and set itaside, then put the other chip in and try booting it in both slots. If itboots, just to verify that the chip set aside is bad, mark an x on it and putit into the open memory chip slot and try booting.
try cycling your battery it should be done to lithium ion every couple of months. Run your computer until it shuts down from low battery. Then leave it unplugged for at least 5 hours to make sure all residual power is gone. Then fully charge the battery, this will help fix battery health issues.
First you need to determine how many blinks you are getting when you try to power on the laptop. Check whether it is coming on or not. try the same procedure with Hard drive. If laptop is getting power on after removing one of the device then we can be sure that that particular device is faulty and we can change that then? If the blinking light on a Dell is yellow or amber or orange (somewhere in that color range) and continues to blink the entire time it is plugged into AC power (wall outlet) and when you unplug it from the wall the laptop immediately dies .... then you battery is dead and needs replaced.
If the blinking light stops after a while (perhaps a minute?) and then turns green while plugged into AC power, then it is successfully charging - or so it thinks.
When you unplug it from the wall, does it stay up and running? If it runs, it's OK - just ignore the light and plan on getting a new battery one day, start browsing now. :) If it dies immediately upon unplugging, then your battery is dead and needs replaced.
Its late, so just to make sure I'm not brain-dead basically your laptop runs fine as long as its powered by the AC adaptor but dies fairly quickly while running via battery.
This is very typical of a battery that will no longer hold a charge, not normally a user repairable item. It could also be that the charging electronics (in the laptop) isn't charging the battery, again not a typical user repair job. About your only option short of taking it to the repair shop is buying or borrowing a battery as a test.
